Job Description

Providence Public Schools District (PPSD) seeks an exceptional HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL who is highly qualified and skillful to join our community of teachers, students, and stakeholders.

We serve approximately 22,000 students at 37 elementary, middle, and high schools. Approximately 55% of students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Combined, our students and families speak over 75 different languages and hail from 91 countries of origin.

The School Principal is responsible for administering and leading the total school program, focusing on student‑centered learning, equity, achievement, building a positive school climate that supports the whole student, leveraging research and data to drive initiatives and instruction, and building a high‑performing staff and leadership team to achieve the school’s vision and goals. The principal will collaborate with parents, community members, consultants, and other internal and external stakeholders to implement educational programs, capital improvements, systems reform, tools, and other resources to accelerate student achievement.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: The principal will be supervised by the assigned Zone Director.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: The principal will plan, coordinate, organize, supervise, and evaluate the work of the instructional, professional, and clerical staff.

Education Requirements
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in educational administration/leadership.
  • Minimum of five (5) years in teaching experience.
  • Experience in an educational leadership position, such as academic coaching or as a certified administrator.
Ride Certification Requirements
  • Rhode Island Department of Education Certificate in Building Administration K‑12.
Knowledge, Skills, and Capacities
  • Strong knowledge of curriculum, instruction, organizational patterns, school operations, and student services.
  • Demonstrated competence in staff recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation.
  • Problem‑solving skills and ability to act effectively under stress.
  • Motivational skills to encourage staff performance and morale.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; multilingualism preferred.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience that are substantively equivalent.
  • Strong belief that all students can learn to high levels and thrive when given the chance.

  • Instruction for English Learners and Special Education Students.
