Education Specialist – Educator Quality
Rhode Island Department of Education is seeking an Education Specialist to strengthen the educator workforce. The role supports Educator Preparation Program Reviews (PREP‑RI), ensures quality certification processes, and uses data to inform statewide decisions and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities- Approve certification applications timely and accurately.
- Conduct annual personnel assignment process to confirm schools employ properly certified personnel.
- Provide technical guidance and assistance in the certification process.
- Conduct on‑site visits to ensure all teacher preparation programs meet approval standards; collaborate with higher‑education institutions providing technical assistance.
- Disseminate policy information and research about certification requirements to educators and higher education.
- Support districts and training programs in training and testing teacher assistants to meet state and federal standards.
- Identify exemplary educators, solicit nominations, screen applications, convene panels, prepare nominee materials, and organize recognition ceremonies.
- Facilitate group planning meetings of the Educator Quality Fellows to set goals, prioritize work, and set calendars.
- Conduct research in the design and development of a state‑of‑the‑art system for preparation, certification, and professional development of educators.
- Administer grants and other fiscal responsibilities as assigned.
- Perform related tasks as needed.
- Master’s degree in education.
- Five years of teaching experience; management or administration experience preferred.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations related to educator preparation and certification.
- Knowledge of national, state, and professional standards for pre‑K through 16 educators.
- Knowledge of state colleges and universities.
- Knowledge of certification regulations and procedures.
- Skilled at working collaboratively with higher‑education personnel, program approval teams, diverse groups, and the public.
- Skilled at resolving conflict, communicating effectively, and exchanging information with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
