Lower School Special Education/Resource Teacher

Reports to: Lower School Principal & Director of Special Education

Hours: 1.0 FTE, Exempt

Temporary:  school year

Position Overview: The responsibilities of this position will be performed under the direct supervision of the Lower School Principal and Director of Special Education. The Special Education/Resource Teacher will assume the case management duties as determined by the Principal and Director of Special Education.

Responsibilities/duties include, but are not limited to:

Evaluations

  • Evaluate students’ skills to identify strengths and needs, measure progress and determine eligibility. (Use standardized and RTI measures)

IEPs

  • Develop IEP goals and objectives with parents and teachers and multidisciplinary team members
  • Coordinate planning meetings with parents, teachers, and specialists
  • Assist teachers with the development and carryover of IEP goals into PLP programs

Service Delivery

  • Implement IEP goals through remedial programs, classroom accommodations/modifications, and consultation with teachers and specialists
  • Complete quarterly progress reports
  • Maintain up-to-date progress data
  • Modify and/or make accommodations to lessons, projects, groupings, and tests to meet students’ learning needs
  • Employ a variety of teaching strategies and techniques to ensure student understanding
  • Plan, collaborate, and co-teach
  • Develop a Resource Room where students are able to receive services in a small distraction-reduced setting when it is determined that the classroom environment may be too stimulating for these individuals. Resource Room will also serve as a space for students to visit to complete practice independent activities (computer programming)
  • Coordinate schedules with teachers to service students in the classroom, consult regarding classroom strategies, and monitor progress of special education students in an integrated setting

Meetings

  • Participate in TST/RTI meetings as needed
  • Participate in TST/RTI meetings to decide to evaluate, review testing, decide if there is a disability or not, plan for special education services, and review progress or lack thereof for students already in special education programs
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills to develop rapport with all members of the school community including parents, teachers, and administrators

Ongoing Professional Development

  • Stay up to date with knowledge about the disabilities of students on caseload such as ADHD, LD, ED, MR, OCD, Asperger’s Syndrome, Tourette’s, Bipolar and depression
  • Stay up to date with teacher certification

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university, required
  • Valid Rhode Island Department of Education Certification required
    • Elementary/Middle Grades Special Education Teacher, Grades K-8
  • National background check (after offer)
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required

Salary: $49,121 to $92,518 Per Year
