Job Description

North Providence Public Schools is seeking an enthusiastic and passionate Early Childhood Special Education Teacher [part-time] for Woodhaven Elementary School/District Wide. Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate early intervention transitions and incoming referrals.
  • Schedule individualized education program (IEP) meetings for incoming families, ensuring appropriate documentation is provided to families ahead of time.
  • Conduct developmental and educational assessments, including observations, and complete all corresponding evaluation write-ups.
  • Attend Rhode Island itinerant early childhood special education training (RI-IECSE) (Itinerant model) as needed; willingness to complete training if not already certified.
  • Serve as local education agency (LEA) representative for eligibility and IEP meetings upon request from the Early Childhood Director.
  • Act as a professional representative for North Providence Public Schools when collaborating with families, staff, and outside community stakeholders.
  • Complete IEPs and child outcomes summary (COS) entry forms for all incoming pre-kindergarten students.
  • Provide coverage for pre-kindergarten classrooms as needed.
  • Attend required Rhode Island early learning and development standards (RIELDS) training necessary for Bright Stars Certification.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the building principal, the director of early childhood, director of student services and/or their designee(s).

Job Requirements

Candidates must be certified by the Rhode Island Department of Education in the following areas:
Early Childhood Education Teacher, Grades PK - 3;
Early Childhood Special Education Teacher, Birth through Grade
3. Qualifications include:

  • Valid safety care/CPI certification, preferred.
  • Documented experience and/or training with students who are differently abled and with students who have behaviors that interfere with learning.
  • Ability to assist students when met with a challenge by physical needs, such as outbursts, running, etc.
  • A sympathetic understanding for students who are differently abled.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment in resolving problems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to create positive relationships and work collaboratively.
  • Strong oral, organizational and written skills with an excellent attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of functional behavior assessments (FBA), behavior intervention plans (BIP), manifestation determination, multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) and positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS).
  • Knowledge of the general education curriculum and best practices for social-emotional learning.
  • Knowledge of formal assessment tools used for this age.
  • Willingness to promote the general goals of the district. Preference will be given to candidates who hold or can demonstrate progress towards an English as a second language certification issued by the Rhode Island Department of Education. Preference will be given to applicants who meet the awareness or proficiency requirement per the RI Right to Read Act | (FAQ RI Right to Read Act)
