Job DescriptionProvidence Public Schools District (PPSD) seeks an exceptional MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCIAL STUDIES ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) TEACHER who is highly qualified and skillful to join our community of teachers, students and stakeholders. This is an exciting opportunity for teachers who seek a challenging yet rewarding teaching experience.
Please note: This position is available for one year only. Hired candidates will be displaced or non-renewed for the following school year; however, displaced teachers remain district employees and will be guaranteed a position in SY27-28.
The Rhode Island Right to Read Act requires educators to exhibit proficiency or awareness of the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy. This position requires Structured Literacy Proficiency Level within one year of hire.
Under the direction of the school principal and/or appropriate supervisor, the teacher plans and provides English as a Second Language instruction to students identified as needing ESL support by the district’s annual English Language Proficiency assessment.
Responsibilities- Accelerate the learning or acquisition of Academic English through the academic content of math, language arts, science, and social studies to help students achieve academic success and meet classroom expectations.
- Serve as a resource for information regarding students from diverse language backgrounds.
- Implement all district MLL procedures.
- Plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans using instructional materials aligned to grade level standards that facilitate active and engaging learning for all students.
- Provide appropriate scaffolds for multilingual learners of varying English Language proficiency levels to ensure meaningful access to grade level content.
- Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment, using relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction.
- Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities and provide appropriate feedback on assignments.
- Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing a warm, welcoming, and culturally relevant environment.
- Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and regularly use data to observe and evaluate student performance and development to adjust teaching strategies.
- Maintain and update accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development.
- Communicate information regularly to students, colleagues, and families regarding student progress and student needs in a language they can understand.
- Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities to support all students.
- Actively participate in and contribute to department, school, district and parent meetings and professional development.
- Make recommendations for students being referred or during IEP meetings regarding instruction and assessments.
- Assign and grade classwork, homework, tests, and assignments according to state standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university.

- Elementary Education Teacher, Grades KG-6 and All Grades English to Speakers of Other Languages Teacher, Grades PK-12
- Middle Grades Social Studies Teacher, Grades 5-8 and All Grades English to Speakers of Other Languages Teacher, Grades PK-12
- Secondary Grades Social Studies Teacher, Grades 6-12 and All Grades English to Speakers of Other Languages Teacher, Grades PK-12
