Position Overview

The Sherlock Center invites applications for a Teacher of the Visually Impaired, Paul V. Sherlock Center on Disabilities. The individual will work as an itinerant vision educator conducting vision assessments, providing vision instruction and other duties assigned by the director.
Primary PurposeThis teacher will be responsible for direct specialized instruction as well as indirect services to students who are blind or visually impaired (ages 3-21) as a member of a trans‑disciplinary team in a variety of settings.
Responsibilities- Assessment and Evaluation: obtain and interpret all eye‑related information, conduct and interpret functional vision and learning media assessments, and recommend additional assessments as needed.
- Participate in the development and implementation of IEPs as a member of a trans‑disciplinary team.
- Provide direct, specialized instruction of developmental and compensatory skills related to vision and visual impairment (e.g., Braille, visual efficiency, print adaptations, learning devices, etc.).
- Provide training and consultation to teachers, therapists, and support staff on the impact of vision loss and necessary accommodations.
- Prepare, obtain, and disseminate specialized materials and books, ensuring timely availability.
- Be knowledgeable of state regulations and procedures for referrals, assessments, IEP development, and progress reports.
- Consult with students, parents, teachers, counselors, and school personnel regarding resources for students who are blind or visually impaired.
- Participate in coordinating and providing the continuum of related services needed.
- Collaborate with technology personnel and vendors to assess and use assistive technology.
- Maintain records of student assessments, IEPs, reviews, and release forms, following confidentiality policies.
- Maintain material and equipment records and census information.
- Comprehensive knowledge of best practices for children who are blind or visually impaired.
- Proficiency in Grade II Braille and Nemeth Code.
- Ability to conduct functional vision and learning media assessments.
- Ability to develop, support, and monitor appropriate learning environments.
- Knowledge of core general curriculum and expanded core curriculum.
- Proficiency in assistive technology and instructional techniques.
- Strong organizational, communication, and report‑writing skills.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education of children who are blind or visually impaired.
- Certifications: Eligible for Rhode Island Teacher Certification as a Teacher of Children who are blind and visually impaired.
- Experience: Experience with children who are blind or visually impaired.
- Master’s Degree.
