Position Overview
The Department of Educational Studies at Rhode Island College invites a creative, collaborative, and student-centered teacher-scholar to join our dynamic faculty. We seek a candidate with strong expertise in History/Social Studies content and innovative, research-based pedagogy, as well as a demonstrated ability to engage in interdisciplinary work across the college.
The primary role of the successful candidate will be to teach in the newly redesigned Secondary Education History/Social Studies Program, which leads to Social Studies teacher certification in Rhode Island. Responsibilities include teaching History/Social Studies Methods courses and supervising candidates in both the Practicum and Student Teaching semesters.
Additional responsibilities include supporting RIDE accreditation efforts in collaboration with the Departments of Educational Studies and History, building professional relationships with local educators and school partners, teaching introductory or advanced History and Social Studies courses as needed, and advising undergraduate students in the major.
Essential Duties
● Teach undergraduate courses in the Secondary Education History/Social Studies Program, including Methods, Practicum, and Student Teaching;
● Assist the History/Social Studies Secondary Education Program Coordinator;
● Serve as a liaison between the Educational Studies and History Departments;
● Collect data for the development of RIDE accreditation reports
● Work with the Office of Partnerships and Placements to build strong relationships with local teachers in the field;
● Advise undergraduate majors and intended majors;
● Maintain an active research agenda.
Occasional Duties
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Department Chair of Educational Studies.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
● Comprehensive knowledge of the field of History/Social Studies education.
● Demonstrated excellent in teaching.
● Comfort working collaboratively across departments and schools within the college.
● Evidence of ability to advise and mentor undergraduate teacher candidates.
● Strong organizational and administrative skills.
Required Qualifications
Education:
Doctorate in education, History, or related field (ABD if completed by August 2026).
Experience:
● 3 or more years of experience teaching at the undergraduate level, primarily pre-service and/or in-service teacher education;
● 3 or more years of experience teaching at the K-12 level
Preferred Qualifications
● 3 or more years of experience as a social studies teacher, with at least two years teaching in a public-school setting.
Environmental Conditions
Teaching is performed in a traditional classroom setting, some online teaching.
Position Details
FLSA Exempt Full Time / Part Time Full-time Proposed Compensation
Minimum Salary for Rank:
Assistant Professor - $63,519.76
May be eligible for additional compensation based on prior collegiate level or industry specific experience.
