Principal

The Behavior Support Assistant (BSA) supports students with significant and complex special education needs, including cognitive, behavioral, communication, and/or medical challenges in 1:1, 1:2, or flexible (float) assignments. This role may support specific students or multiple classrooms, with assignments that may change based on IEPs and student needs. BSAs work in structured settings such as Behavior Intervention Programs or self-contained alternate classrooms, assisting with the implementation of individualized support plans, reinforcing positive behavior strategies, and supporting students’ social, emotional, and functional development.

This role requires participation in Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training and the use of de-escalation and intervention strategies to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment.

NOTE:
The safety of school children is an important responsibility of the teacher assistant program. As such, please note that all teacher assistants MUST be available for bus monitoring assignments and will be paid in accordance with the additional hours worked.

• Assist with data collection as related to individual student programs.
• Implement classroom and individual level/point systems and individualized programs.
• Intervene, monitor, and document behavior of students during crisis situations including time-out and physical interventions/restraint.
• De-escalate problem behavior within the school setting.
• Accompany students and implement behavior systems during specials, lunch, recess, and other times during the school day when the students are not in the special needs classroom.
• Function as part of a team in creative problem solving related to individual students.
• Assist with training other paraprofessionals in behavior management, crisis intervention, data collection.
• Work as part of a team with service providers and outside service agencies to meet the students’ needs.
• Take part in advanced training related to job specifications.
• Actively participate in classroom activity as directed by the teacher.
• Develop and train Providence staff in behavior plans and implementation.
• Effect a positive learning environment.
• Actively participate in teacher directed activities with the students.
• Maintain positive student-staff relationships.
• Plan and coordinate incentives for behavior classrooms.
• Covers lunch in cafeterias at all sites.
• Tech will be on time and monitor bus duty as per policy and procedure on the assigned day.
• Assist with AM/PM transitions.
• Provide FLOAT coverage for other behavior needs classrooms in emergency situations with advanced approval by Local Union 1033.
