Associate or Full Professor of Classics

The Department of Classics at Amherst College invites applications for two positions: a full-time tenure‑track assistant professor of classics and a full-time tenured associate or full professor of classics. Both appointments will begin on July 1, 2027 and require a Ph.D. in classics or a related field by the start of the appointment.

In addition to a well‑articulated research plan, successful candidates will be committed to undergraduate and interdisciplinary teaching in a liberal‑arts context. They must be able to teach Greek and Latin at all levels and offer courses of general appeal in Greco‑Roman studies broadly defined. Opportunities for cross‑disciplinary teaching in the First‑Year Seminar Program and other collaborations are available. The teaching load is two courses per semester, typically three language courses per year.

Candidates will also be expected to direct writing and research at all undergraduate levels, advise senior thesis projects, and participate in the life of the college and department.

The research interests of candidates should complement those already represented in the department and help expand and diversify our offerings. Areas of research specialization are open and include:

  • visual and material culture
  • rhetoric, law, and democracy
  • social and cultural history
  • performance and reception
  • knowledge production (scientific and technical)

Successful candidates for the tenured position will be expected to have a superior record of publication, teaching, and professional service.

Assistant Professor of Classics (tenure track)

Expected salary range: $90,000 to $125,000. Salary will vary based on education, training, experience, tenure status, and other nondiscriminatory considerations. Amherst College offers a comprehensive, highly competitive benefits package meeting the needs of staff and faculty and their families.

Associate or Full Professor of Classics (with tenure)

Expected salary range: $105,000 to $135,000 for associate rank and $120,000 to $200,000 for full professor rank. Salary will vary based on education, training, experience, tenure status, and other nondiscriminatory considerations.
