Job Description

Providence Public School District (PPSD) is seeking dependable, flexible, and student-centered individuals to join our team as Per Diem Non-Certified Substitute Teachers.

PPSD serves approximately 22,000 students across 37 elementary, middle, and high schools. Our students and families speak more than 75 languages and represent 91 countries of origin, creating a rich and diverse learning community.

Per Diem Non-Certified Substitute Teachers provide instructional support in the District's hard‑to‑fill classrooms, ensuring students continue to receive a safe, structured, and engaging learning environment when their regular teacher is absent. These assignments are critical to maintaining continuity of instruction and supporting student success.

There is a three (3) day minimum commitment associated with this position.

Supervision

Works under the general supervision of the building principal or his/her/their designee with some latitude for the exercise of independent judgment; work is reviewed usually upon completion for conformance to established policies, rules, regulations and procedures.

Rate of Pay
  • $180 per day
Education Requirements
  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree, Associate's degree, or attainment of junior status as an undergraduate student.
Experience Requirements
  • Prior experience working with school‑age children in a role comparable to that of a teacher, instructor, or guardian, demonstrating the ability to support their intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development.
Responsibilities
  • Provide an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students to ensure success for every student.
  • Supervise students in a variety of school‑related settings.
  • Communicate and interact with students and staff.
  • Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Support and nurture the academic, social‑emotional, and physical needs of all students.
  • Advise, mentor, and model appropriate habits of mind and best practices in teaching.
  • Create a personalized, rigorous, socially engaging school environment that meets the needs of all students as they prepare for high school and beyond.
  • Encourage student involvement in the learning process and enable each student to achieve learning objectives.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
  • Takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a positive learning environment in the classroom.
  • Be willing to work in one of the designated hard‑to‑fill areas.
Minimum Qualification Standards
  • Three (3) day minimum commitment.
  • Prior experience working with school‑age children in a role comparable to that of a teacher, instructor, mentor, or guardian.
  • Ability to work within the parameters of an Aligned Instruction system, including teaching a unified curriculum.
  • Knowledge and skills to build positive relationships with people from diverse populations.
  • Commitment to the mission and vision of PPSD.
  • Completion of new hire compliance training prior to first day of employment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with PC‑based computer applications, Microsoft Office, email, web applications, and industry‑specific technology.
  • Commit to work at least 3 days per week.
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre‑employment criminal history background check; work may not begin until check is cleared.
