Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature

The Department of Comparative Literature of Brown University invites applications for an assistant professorship in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century French and/or Francophone and Comparative Literature, to begin July 1, 2027. Applicants will have been trained not only in French and/or Francophone literature but also in a comparable literary tradition in another language. While the language and period of the second literature are open, candidates should justify their comparative focus in their applications.

Applicants should hold or be on the cusp of attaining a Ph.D. in the fields of Comparative Literature, French and/or Francophone Literature, or a related field, with expertise in nineteenth-century French literature. Applicants must demonstrate excellence in scholarship and teaching, and a professional-level command of at least two languages; in particular, applicants must demonstrate a responsible knowledge of the French/Francophone novel from about 1820 to about 1920.

Applicants should also have expertise in a second literary tradition, and their scholarship should be comparative in nature.
