Overview

Senior Level Waterfront Engineers are needed to assist with the planning, permitting, and design of waterfront and coastal infrastructure. The role covers design of marinas, piers, bulkheads, seawalls, revetments, marine terminal structures, and living shoreline stabilization, with flexibility on location within the VHB footprint.

Responsibilities
  • Support ongoing Waterfront/Coastal practice projects and business development.
  • Assist in the development of qualifications and proposals for waterfront infrastructure and coastal resilience RFPs.
  • Manage engineering analysis, preliminary, and detailed design of waterfront/coastal structures.
  • Lead projects (scope, budget, schedule), coordinate sub‑consultants, ensure quality control, and oversee permitting for:
    • Piers, marinas, and boardwalks.
    • Seawalls, bulkheads, revetments, breakwaters, wave fences, fendering, and recreational structures.
    • Living shoreline erosion solutions.
    • Technical analyses and calculations.
    • Mooring and berthing analyses.
    • Dredging design and permitting.
    • Preparation of specifications, bid, and contract documents.
    • Construction contract administration.
    • Site inspections and reports.
Qualifications
  • B.S. in Civil, Structural, Waterfront, or Coastal Engineering; M.S. preferred.
  • 8–11 years of Waterfront Engineering experience including geotechnical and structural analysis.
  • Professional Engineer license required, or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Knowledge of Rhode Island regulatory processes preferred.
  • Experience delivering projects for Federal, State, and local coastal agencies such as USACE, FEMA, USGS, NOAA preferred.
  • Knowledge of FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program and coastal flood hazard analysis and mapping methodologies.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills.

Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in Boston/Watertown, MA is $115,000–$150,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
