Job Summary

The Providence Center Child & Adolescent Services Multisystemic Therapy (MST) Clinical Therapist will provide community based treatment for youth and family with complex clinical, social and educational problems. Over a period of 4 – 6 months, services are delivered in homes, neighborhoods, schools and communities.

Emphasis is on promoting behavioral change in the youth’s natural environment. Family interventions seek to promote the parent’s capacity to monitor and discipline the adolescent. Initial family sessions identify the strengths and weaknesses of the youth, his family, peers, school, and other factors.

Problems throughout the family are explicitly identified for change, and the strengths of each system are used to facilitate such change.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform a comprehensive psychosocial assessment of assigned consumers.
  • Provide individual, group, and family mental health and/or substance abuse therapy.
  • Perform and record mental status examination.
  • Collect pertinent data from appropriate collateral sources in accordance with confidentiality guidelines.
  • Mediate and resolve family problems and remain in a calm and professional manner during crisis or emergency situations.
  • Apply knowledge of Psychiatric Diagnosis (DSM IV).
  • Assess clinical emergencies, including suicide and danger to others.
  • Develop and present, verbally and in writing, a clear clinical formulation based on behavioral data and relevant theory while incorporating psychosocial and family issues.
  • Use psychiatric consultation and intervention when clinically appropriate.
  • Use knowledge to decide appropriate levels of care in order to refer to various points in the continuum of care.
  • Develop and implement a plan of care with ongoing consumer input.
  • Apply knowledge of psychopathology and primary methodologies of psychotherapy.
  • Identify specific therapeutic interventions appropriate for specific problems.
  • Provide psychotherapy and group therapy, both short and long term.
  • Demonstrate awareness and skill in addressing areas related to diversity.
  • Identify psychiatric disorders in parents/caretakers of clients and incorporate the necessary theory and treatment techniques into the work with the client system.
  • Recommend program terminations and coordinate in accordance with Center and referral source policies.
  • Ensure collection of urine samples and complete related paperwork and breathalyzer testing as required by contract.
  • Perform record keeping in accordance with Health Information Services and other Center requirements.
  • Complete initial assessment forms.
  • Complete progress notes with appropriate format.
  • Develop and implement a plan of care with ongoing consumer input.
  • Complete a clear, specific, behaviorally oriented treatment plan as required with consumer signature.
  • Complete required reports and evaluations.
  • Complete a Therapist/Counselor Field Visit “Before and After” form.
  • Audiotape of a home visit per month and a Therapist/Counselor Tape Review “Drop-off” form for review.
  • Collaborate with other providers, agencies, and individuals in the consumers' network of care.
  • Maintain knowledge of the systems, services and resources available to the population and access them as needed.
  • Communicate with various local agencies and individuals, as well as with Center staff.
  • Attend trainings, case presentations and conferences.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with Center staff, consumers, community agencies, funding sources, and the public.
Requirements
  • Knowledge about human development for children, ages 5-18, including the ability to identify developmental delays.
  • Skill in evaluation and clinical treatment with children, ages 5-18, and their families, with serious emotional disturbance and behavior disorders.
  • Basic knowledge about psychiatric medication and awareness of significant side effects.
