SUMMARY
Clinical Research Financial Specialist resides within the Brown University Health Office of Cancer Research (BHOCR) under the direction of a Department Research Finance Manager. The role supports and mentors entry‑level and mid‑level colleagues and manages pre‑award and post‑award activities for a portfolio of clinical research studies, including calendar builds in OnCore, coverage analysis, budget development and negotiation, sponsor invoicing, accounts receivable, study closeout, grant applications, and patient charge segregation.
This senior resource collaborates with faculty and researchers on sponsored research applications, oversees diverse funding types, provides guidance and mentorship, and represents the Department in institutional committees.
- Financial management of assigned clinical research projects, including planning, development, monitoring and coordination of departmental research administrative activities.
- Pre‑award: facilitate study start‑up activities, develop calendars and coverage analyses, negotiate budgets, execute clinical trial agreements, request letters of collaboration, and prepare grant applications in compliance with sponsor guidelines.
- Post‑award: prepare and submit invoices to sponsors, complete check requests for vendor invoices, update associated budgets and Medicare coverage analysis, finalize budgets, review Notices of Award, manage budget adjustments and reporting, and ensure timely sponsor responses.
- Provide oversight of financial and administrative aspects of projects, interpreting sponsor and institutional requirements, and managing budgeting, monitoring, and reporting activities.
- Maintain confidential records, communicate with review committees and faculty, prepare reports and documents, and represent the department in research administration meetings.
- Ensure adherence to internal and external policies, maintain compliance with regulations, and conduct billing review for clinical research study participants.
- Education
:
Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance or related area, or equivalent, with at least 10 years of relevant research administration experience. - Experience
:
Minimum ten years in a research/academic environment, including federal and non‑federal funding, grant application processes, and regulations of local, federal, hospital, and independent agencies. Oncology clinical research experience preferred. - Skills
:
Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to interact with diverse stakeholders; thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Windows; ability to learn specific research access programs.
