The Behavioral Medicine and Addictions Research at Butler Hospital is looking to hire full-time research assistants to work on studies investigating the development and treatment of mood, substance use, and chronic pain problems in patients recruited from a psychiatric hospital setting or a community setting. There is a strong emphasis on physical health, health behaviors such as exercise, and digital mental health in our projects.

Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in psychology or related experience by the start of the position. The position is particularly attractive for those wishing to pursue graduate school or medical school in the future. Opportunities to publish papers and present at professional conferences are available and encouraged. Our previous research assistants have been highly successful gaining acceptance to top-tier doctoral programs in clinical psychology and related fields.

Butler Hospital is a Brown University-affiliated psychiatric hospital located in Providence, RI. Butler Hospital (est. 1844) is one of the earliest psychiatric facilities in the United States. The Behavioral Medicine and Addictions Research group at Butler is one of several active research groups at the hospital. These research groups are comprised of academic psychologists, post-doctoral fellows, research assistants, master’s-level interventionists, and project coordinators.

Research in this group is currently funded by numerous federal and private grants, and the majority of this work centers on mood disorders, substance use disorders, post-hospital transitions, digital health, mindfulness/acceptance therapies and yoga, and physical activity promotion.

Job Description

Brown University-affiliated researchers working at Butler Hospital are seeking to hire research assistants for grant-funded studies investigating the development and treatment of mood, substance use, and chronic pain problems. Responsibilities include recruiting and tracking subjects, screening electronic medical records, managing research data, preparing reports, conducting research assessments with psychiatric patients, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team conducting research in a psychiatric hospital setting.

Knowledge of clinical research procedures, experience conducting diagnostic interviews, and experience using Microsoft Office and REDCap are helpful. A successful applicant will be motivated, detail-oriented, able to work independently, and have strong communication and organizational skills. Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekend hours is required. As data collection may be off-site, applicants need to provide their own transportation.

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree in psychology or related experience required. Experience with psychology research and/or working with psychiatric patients desirable.
