SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Directors for TMH Consult Service and Brown University Health Recovery Center, evaluates, diagnoses, and treats a wide range of psychosocial problems, applying individual clinical social work skills to assist patients and their families in resolving personal and environmental problems attributable to mental or physical illness. RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Complete comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments to determine the stage of change regarding substance use and appropriate level of care.
  • Collaborate with the primary care team to provide behavioral health expertise, guidance on treatment options, MOUD initiation, and discharge resources.
  • Educate patients and loved ones about the impact of substance use on health to increase motivation to change.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary care planning for patients with substance use disorders, sometimes with comorbid psychiatric stressors, and respond to crisis intervention needs.
  • Refer patients to community agencies or higher levels of care as needed.
  • Arrange referrals for patients whose acuity exceeds outpatient care.
  • Develop treatment plans and provide individual and group interventions, analyzing course and results.
  • Maintain current knowledge of community resources and access them as required.
  • Offer flexible walk‑in hours for rapid access to treatment.
  • Facilitate or co‑facilitate groups focused on cognitive‑behavioral therapy, relapse prevention, motivational interviewing, and acceptance and commitment therapy/mindfulness‑based interventions.
  • Collaborate with psychosocial colleagues on shared cases, providing additional assessments and referral assistance.
  • Participate in the development of addiction service programs across Brown University Health.
  • Provide educational support to MSW interns, collaborating with educational facilities and completing associated tasks.
  • Contribute to education of Addiction Medicine Fellows, Residents, and Medical Students through case discussions and modeling.
  • Maintain and enhance professional expertise through appropriate educational activities, including attending training for specific clinical responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree in Social Work and licensure through the RI Department of Health as a LICSW and/or LCDP.
  • Eligibility for credentialing to provide independent psychotherapy (individual and family).
  • Training and experience to address the needs of patients within a general medical population with behavioral health needs.
  • Analytical and therapeutic skills to evaluate patients, develop treatment plans, initiate therapy, and evaluate outcomes.
  • Ability to interact effectively with patients, families, medical staff, and outside agencies.
  • At least one year of clinical experience in general mental health counseling and addiction treatment.
  • Perform independent work within department policies, referring complex problems to the program manager as needed.
  • No supervisory responsibilities.
