Under guidance of Medical Director and Regional Collections Manager, assist with collection of blood and blood products. As a phlebotomist, ensure a positive and comfortable experience for donor volunteers, helping them feel valued and informed. Trained in blood‑drawing procedures and handle tasks from donor information management to infection control. Ensures we adhere to policies and standards set by NYBC, FDA, and other organizations.
WhatYou’ll Do
- Welcome Donors with a Smile – Provide outstanding customer service at mobile units and/or donor centers. Greet donors warmly, educate first‑time donors to ease anxiety, guide them throughout process, and ensure a positive experience.
- Blood Draws – Perform blood draws and collect specimens following protocols under guidance of Medical Director and Regional Collections Manager; training provided.
- Operating Medical Equipment – Operate and maintain equipment for blood collection, including cleaning, inspecting, and storing appropriately.
- Manage Donor Information – Verify and update donor information in BECS system to create barcodes and keep staff informed of changes.
- Educate and Assist – Help donors choose donation type best for them based on inventory needs; explain benefits of automated donations such as plasma, platelets, and auto‑red cells.
- Follow Safety Procedures – Adhere to infection control practices: blood/body fluid precautions, isolation techniques, and proper discard procedures.
- Record Keeping – Perform clerical tasks to support blood‑drawing activities and maintain required records and documentation.
- Educate Donor – Educate donors on importance of blood donation and ensure experience is positive and encouraging.
Ability and Desire to Learn Medical Procedures – Comprehensive training will be provided; must complete all prescribed training programs to be qualified.
Comfortable with a Hospital‑like Environment – Must work in hospital‑like setting, handling blood products with care.
Warm and Caring Personality – High level of warmth and care toward donors; exceptional bedside manner.
Must Have – Car, valid driver’s license, willingness to travel and work flexible schedule.
Education – High School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Experience – Background in healthcare, phlebotomy, or customer service.
Skills – Effective communication in English, follow directions, work with computers.
Travel – Through the State of RI, and areas of Massachusetts and Connecticut.
