Clinical Dietitian Full Time Pediatrics

Overview

Under the general supervision of the Senior Clinical Dietitians Specialists and the Clinical Nutrition Director/Supervisor, the Clinical Dietitian provides nutritional care to hospital patients throughout Brown University Health. The role includes interviewing patients and/or family members, reviewing electronic health records, developing nutrition plans of care, monitoring outcomes data, and updating patient progress in the electronic health record. The Clinical Dietitian also directs support personnel when needed and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to ensure high‑quality, evidence‑based nutrition care.

• Use accurate data to identify nutrition related problems and assess current and past personal, medical, family, and psychosocial histories.
• Measure and evaluate anthropometric indicators (height, weight, BMI, arm circumference, z‑scores) and laboratory profiles (acid‑base, renal, endocrine, inflammatory markers, vitamins, minerals, lipid profile).
• Obtain, assess, and re‑assess findings from the Nutrition‑focused physical examination (NFPE) including signs of deficiency, edema, muscle wasting, body composition changes, pressure injuries, oral health, and feeding ability.
• Conduct comprehensive food and nutrition histories, including intake, administration, medication, diet supplement use, knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, readiness to change, and food security.
• Estimate nutrient needs and recommended body weight using reference data and standards.
• Review data collected by dietetic technicians and other health professionals to identify problem areas and develop or revise nutrition diagnoses.
• Base intervention and plan of care on best research evidence, guidelines, and best practices.
• Document patient care plans in the Interdisciplinary Plan of Care and the electronic health record, updating plans as needed.
• Participate in discharge planning, recommending nutritional programs to enhance patient readiness for discharge.
• Provide individual and group nutrition education for patients and families, both inpatient and outpatient.
• Offer nutrition seminars and workshops to physicians and other health professionals, including peer groups in the community.
• Represent Food & Nutrition Services at interdisciplinary meetings and contribute to patient satisfaction, quality improvement, and financial productivity initiatives.
• May participate in community and media programs as requested.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Food and Nutrition or a related concentration from a US accredited college/university approved by ACEND.
• Completion of an ACEND‑accredited supervised practice program and successful passage of the national RDN examination.
• License as a Dietitian/Nutritionist in the state of Rhode Island within 3 months of hire.
• Proficient understanding of nutrition principles in adult and pediatric disease states and of the nutrition care process.
• Strong analytical, critical‑thinking, and communication skills.
• Administrative ability to direct and coordinate quality nutrition care in assigned areas.
• Commitment to continuing education: 75 hours every five years for CDR, 20 hours every two years for Rhode Island LDN.
• Preferred membership in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and relevant practice groups (e.g., MNPG, PNPG).
• Proficient computer skills in MS Word; knowledge of MS PowerPoint and MS Excel preferred.
• One to two years of experience as a Clinical Dietitian preferred.

• Seated, standing, and walking intermittently throughout the day in a normal patient‑care environment.
• May be required to lift up to 10 lbs and travel to off‑site facilities.

Pay Range: $57,340.19 – $94,602.87

Location: Rhode Island Hospital – 593 Eddy Street, Providence, Rhode Island 02903

Work Type: M‑F, 8 am‑5 pm (Day shift), 8 hours per day, driving not required.
