SUMMARY

Under general supervision, but according to established policies and procedures, performs a variety of non‑medical duties in support of Surgical Services. Such activities include, but are not limited to, transporting patients to and from the operating room; picking up and/or delivering supplies, materials, specimens, cultures, and the like. Assists in pre‑operative scrubs; assists in lifting, positioning, and supporting patients. Cleans and prepares equipment utilized in surgical procedures;

prepares material for sterilization. Assists in cleaning and maintaining the operating rooms. Assembles charge form packets.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Transports patients to and from the surgical suite.
  • Reviews pre‑operative patient charts to ensure all forms are signed and tests are completed; informs appropriate nursing personnel of discrepancies.
  • Assists in surgical room preparation by ensuring basic supplies are available such as blankets, solutions, and syringes; cleans furniture and equipment between cases; obtains necessary supplies and equipment required for specific procedures.
  • Assists in prepping patients for surgery; assists with pre‑operative scrubs; lifts, moves, positions patients, supports and holds patients for spinal anesthesia injection and the like.
  • Routinely inventories, requisitions, receives, and stocks supplies in established areas, including sterile linen, instruments, scrub clothes, and the like to ensure availability to meet anticipated needs.
  • Picks up supplies and materials for Surgical Services from various areas of the Hospital such as pharmaceuticals, blood and plasma, as well as routine supplies required by the department; delivers cultures and surgery specimens to designated areas of the Hospital for analysis as appropriate.
  • Assists in general cleaning and maintenance of the operating room such as washing equipment, sorting and stocking supplies, cleaning rooms, washing stretchers and changing light bulbs and the like.
  • Cleans, dries, packages and seals a variety of supplies and material to be sterilized, such as washing, assembling and wrapping basin sets for sterilization; occasionally operates steam/water pressure sterilizers in order to clean and sterilize items.
  • Assembles patient record packs of charge slips appropriate for specific surgical procedures to be completed by others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS BASIC KNOWLEDGE
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to recognize changes in patient’s condition and report such to nursing personnel.
  • Ability to perform simple numerical calculations to calculate and requisition supplies.
  • Knowledge of aseptic techniques to ensure proper cleaning of rooms, equipment, and materials.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English; ability to perform simple numerical calculations.
EXPERIENCE
  • One to three months’ on‑the‑job training and experience.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Transport patients, assist in lifting and positioning patients, and clean and set up equipment.
  • Work in the operating room area and be exposed to odors, bodily fluids, etc. when assisting with patients.
  • Required to work for extended periods in a standing position when assisting with pre‑operative procedures.
  • Some exposure to chemical fumes and infectious disease when cleaning equipment and rooms.
  • Frequent standing, walking, lifting, and carrying to clean equipment, replenish supplies, transport patients and materials, and stock areas.
  • Hazards of injury are minimized by adherence to established safety precautions.
