SUMMARY:
Under the clinical direction of the Medical Director of Employee & Occupational Health Services and in collaboration with EOHS operational leadership, the Advanced Practice Provider—Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant—provides occupational and employee health services across Brown University Health. The Advanced Practice Provider is responsible forevaluation of and development of treatment plans for the care of ambulatory patients and employees.
Assistsin the care and management of employees and patients to include, but not limited to, history and physical examinations, ongoing assessment and intervention, occupational injury and illness management, regulatory medical surveillance, fitness-for-duty evaluations, and coordination of care following emergency department visits. Evaluates and manages work-related injuries and illnesses, including musculoskeletal conditions, minor wounds, respiratory concerns, infectious conditions, and other occupational health presentations. Performs histories and physical examinations and develops appropriate diagnostic, treatment, referral, work-status, and follow-up plans. Manages assigned workers’ compensation cases, including treatment, follow-up, work restrictions, care coordination, and safe return-to-work planning.
Orders and interprets medically indicated testing and prescribes medications, immunizations, treatments, and referrals in accordance with licensure and privileges.
Participates in the management of blood borne pathogen exposures, communicable-disease exposures, and other workplace exposures; provides appropriate testing, prophylaxis, counseling, and follow-up.
Performs provider-level review of pre-placement concerns, immunization and tuberculosis findings, respirator medical evaluations, and other medical surveillance requirements.
Conducts return-to-work and functional evaluations and reviews relevant medical documentation from treating providers.
Supports employee immunization, respiratory protection, tuberculosis surveillance, and medical surveillance programs.
Consults with the Medical Director regarding complex fitness-for-duty evaluations, behavioral health concerns, safety-sensitive positions, disputed work-relatedness, or unclear functional capacity.
Collaborates with EOHS staff, Workers’ Compensation, Human Resources, Infection Prevention, Safety, Leave and Disability, and treating providers while maintaining clinical confidentiality and appropriate role boundaries.
Completes clinical documentation, work-status reports, exposure records, and required occupational health forms accurately and within established time frames.
Participates in chart review, quality improvement, regulatory audits, and the development of clinical policies, protocols, standing orders, and escalation criteria.
Supports injury-prevention initiatives, standardized occupational health practices, clinical reporting, wellbeing initiatives, and the development of expanded occupational health services.
Maintains current knowledge of occupational medicine, applicable OSHA and public health requirements, workers’ compensation processes, and evidence-based clinical practice.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:Nurse Practitioner
Graduate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
Current, unrestricted APRN licensure in the state or states of practice.
Current national certification in a population focus appropriate to the position.
Physician Assistant
Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
Current, unrestricted Physician Assistant licensure in the state or states of practice.
Current NCCPA certification
