Job Description

The Institutional Equity Investigator will play a central role in resolving complaints of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation involving faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students at Brown University. The position also addresses complaints of discriminatory conduct that occur on University grounds and during University-sanctioned programs and activities off campus. This role reports to the Associate Vice President for Institutional Equity, Accessibility, and Compliance and works closely with the Director of Investigations, Title IX Coordinator, Senior Institutional Equity Investigator, and other partners to manage day-to-day responsibilities of the University’s civil rights investigations.

As a member of the Office of Equity Compliance & Reporting in the Division of Campus Life, the Investigator serves as an entry point for community members and guests to report or seek information on complaint processes and non-discrimination policies. The role collaborates with the Office for Equity Compliance, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, University Human Resources, and the Division of Campus Life to develop and implement training programs and informational materials on reporting and adjudication processes related to equal opportunity, nondiscrimination, Title IX and related topics.

Qualifications
  • Education and Experience: Minimum five (5) to seven (7) years of related experience with at least three (3) successive years of recent substantive work in investigating discrimination in higher education, non‑profit or other relevant settings.
  • Master’s degree in higher education administration, law enforcement, criminology, social work, psychology, or related field required.
  • In‑depth knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to civil rights, discrimination, harassment, affirmative action, and related statutes.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings and to travel as necessary.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate or Doctorate degree.
  • Experience in an office of discrimination and harassment.
  • Professional experience conducting investigations in a university setting.
  • Experience investigating cases of interpersonal violence using trauma‑informed best practices.
  • Knowledge of complexities of investigations in a college setting.
  • Title IX Investigator training certification.
  • Knowledge of Maxient software.
Job Competencies
  • Ability to conduct investigations, compose clear, concise, timely, and professional investigative reports, manage confidential information and independently manage a significant caseload.
  • Ability to determine and apply appropriate legal standards in assessing allegations of discrimination.
  • Skill in writing concise, logical analytical reports to convey complex issues.
  • Ability to maintain neutrality and work under stress.
  • Strong conflict‑resolution, problem‑solving, and interviewing skills.
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills with ability to handle complex and extreme sensitivity issues.
  • Extensive knowledge of elements of proof for discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct, and retaliation.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, judgment and neutrality in sensitive situations.
  • Tact, discretion, professionalism, maturity, and outstanding interpersonal, oral and written communication skills required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to listen well, be impartial, and establish rapport with diverse community members.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across the University to resolve complaints in a neutral, sensitive manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with staff at all levels.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex legal documents and evaluate their impact on University policy.
  • Must be able to work independently, collaboratively across the organization, and under supervision.
