About the Y-Lab

The Y-Lab and makerspaces at Moses Brown are designed to imbue and support a culture of creativity, collaboration, and innovation for all. By providing a wide range of low and hi-tech tools and materials (from glue guns, screwdrivers, cardboard, and popsicle sticks to vinyl cutters, laser cutters, 3D printers and power tools), We aim to integrate design thinking, hands-on making, interdisciplinary learning, and authentic problem-solving into the Moses Brown experience.

As a Y-Lab Technician, you will be a vital part of helping our community realize the full potential of these hubs for 21st-century learning.

Role Overview

The Y-Lab Technician will help lower barriers to innovation by providing essential training and support to our students and faculty. You will work alongside Technology Integration Specialists, Employee Support Liaisons, and Student Support Liaisons to ensure reliable, well-supported experiences for everyone using the space. You will promote the work happening in the YLab through documentation and display of projects. The Technician will assist with cleaning and maintenance of the machines and tools.

Technicians will also serve as active partners in shaping and evolving the physical layout of the lab, its policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • 1. Technical Support & Mentorship
  • Provide hands-on human support for both analog (low-tech) and digital (high-tech) creation.
  • Assist users with a variety of makerspace equipment, which may include 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, sewing machines, scroll saws, wood/metal lathes, and CNC routers.
  • Empower students to act as co-creators, makers, and mentors within the space.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment
  • 2. Lab Operations & Safety
  • Maintain adaptable, student-centered, and pedagogy-driven spaces.
  • Clarify and enforce safety zones, protocols, and tool usage expectations.
  • Help reduce barriers to usage while balancing drop-in access with structured scheduling to avoid conflicts.
  • Ensure academic integrity and general expectations are met while allowing for departmental flexibility.
  • 3. Community & Culture Building
  • Help establish and link the Y-Lab with other creative spaces on campus to build a unified "makermind" culture.
  • Contribute to the evolution of the YLab and its policies.
  • Document and showcase student and faculty projects to make creative processes visible and celebrated both within and outside the Moses Brown community.
  • Celebrate iteration, experimentation, and learning from failure alongside the final achievements.
Who Should Apply

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment and is passionate about supporting student agency. If you are eager to help build a tight alignment between curriculum, operations, and hands-on making, we encourage you to apply.
