General Statement of Duties

At Rhode Island College (RIC), to independently perform a full range of tasks involved in the protection, safety and security of individuals and property; to patrol the campus on foot, bicycle and/or in marked police cruisers; to inspect campus buildings and grounds; to guard against fire, theft, damage, defacement and/or destruction; to maintain order and security on institution premises; to identify and apprehend criminal offenders as permitted within the law;

to provide emergency medical services to the campus community, including first aid; to perform all required duties in accordance with applicable State and Federal laws and ordinances; and to do related work as required.

Supervision

Received:
Works under the general and specific instructions of a RIC Campus Police Sergeant with occasional supervision from a RIC Campus Police Lieutenant; work is reviewed in process and upon completion for conformance to provisions of State and Federal laws and ordinances as well as College and Department rules, regulations, policies and orders to include annual performance evaluations.

Exercised:
Usually none unless directed by a superior officer.

  • Provide emergency medical services, including first aid.
  • Reduce opportunities for the commission of crime through preventative law enforcement measures.
  • Facilitate the movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic through enforcement of the Motor Vehicle Code.
  • Proactively identify potential law enforcement problems and communicate the need for services.
  • Actively participate in establishing and maintaining security and safety on the College campus.
  • Promote and preserve peace on campus during gatherings, events, debates and/or in response to disturbances.
  • Exercise authority consistent with obligations imposed by the oath of office.
  • Be accountable to supervisory officers and promptly obey all lawful orders.
  • Coordinate efforts with other members of the Department for teamwork and achievement of Department objectives.
  • Communicate pertinent information promptly and accurately to supervisors and fellow officers.
  • Acquire and record necessary information and document the provision of police services.
  • File all reports and documents prior to the end of each shift with care to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensure property seized or recovered is properly marked, receipted and stored.
  • Maintain equipment in functional and presentable condition.
  • Carry out all duties efficiently and professionally, bringing credit to the Officer, the College, the Department and the law enforcement profession.
  • Assist and provide information to community members upon request.
  • Explain jurisdiction limits courteously and suggest alternate procedures.
  • Serve and deliver warrants, summonses, subpoenas and other official papers promptly and in accordance with law and campus policy.
  • Assist Court prosecutors and testify professionally in court.
  • Refrain from excessive force and bias or prejudice when dealing with the public or detainees.
