Supervisor of Custodial Services

Brown University’s Facilities Management team is seeking a dedicated Custodial Services, Supervisor (Overnight) to lead custodial staff and ensure that the University’s buildings are clean, safe, and well maintained. This role is critical to supporting Brown’s mission, the work of our students, faculty, and staff, and our Facilities Management “We Care” values.

The Supervisor will oversee custodial staff performance, training, and scheduling, ensuring excellent customer service, effective resource use, and compliance with safety and collective bargaining standards.

• Supervise custodial staff, assign tasks, and ensure high‑quality standards for cleanliness and maintenance across campus facilities
• Provide staff training in custodial methods, safety procedures, and proper equipment use
• Conduct regular inspections of assigned buildings and address any issues proactively
• Manage administrative functions including payroll submissions, attendance records, scheduling, and work orders
• Maintain key control systems and oversee compliance with safety programs and collective bargaining agreements
• Gather and incorporate customer feedback to improve custodial operations and service delivery
• Promote a collaborative and inclusive team culture within the Custodial Division

• Education & Experience
• Associate’s degree and 2–4 years custodial/janitorial/maintenance experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Minimum of 2 years’ supervisory experience, preferably within a unionized environment
• Knowledge & Skills
• Strong understanding of custodial practices, safety standards, equipment, and materials
• Excellent leadership, training, and performance management skills
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with diverse groups of employees and stakeholders
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to manage scheduling, attendance, and work order systems
• Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and respond flexibly to changing needs
• Commitment to customer service, teamwork, and supporting an inclusive campus community
• Other Requirements
• Valid driver’s license (must have been active for at least 2 years prior to appointment)
• Ability to walk, stand, and climb stairs for extended periods, and work in varying temperature and weather conditions
• Availability for overnight shifts, evenings, weekends, and holiday rotations as required

• Regularly required to walk, stand, reach, and perform visual inspections
• May require use of personal protective equipment (e.g., safety shoes, gloves, eye protection)
• Must meet requirements of the Animal Care Facility Program, including medical monitoring and Occupational Health and Wellness Survey compliance

The salary is set at $69,000 plus a 5% differential.
