Job Description

The Director of Student Housing and Residential Facilities (DSHRF) reports to the Assistant Vice President for Residential & Community Living. The director leads the management and oversight of Brown University’s undergraduate residential facilities, covering 2.1 million square feet and housing over 5,400 residents. The role focuses on the seamless execution of housing selection, room assignments, and residential operations, including billing, move‑in/out, and facility upgrades.

The director also supports residential operations for graduate students residing at River House, a 270‑bed apartment complex owned and operated by the university.

The director develops and implements departmental planning, policies, and budget processes across all facets of residential operations. The director directly supervises the Associate Director of Residential Operations and the Assistant Director of Residential Facilities and Operations, and indirectly supervises ten additional staff supporting facilities, operations, housing assignments, and 24‑hour key office operations. Collaboration with other campus life and university departments occurs to develop policies, communications, and processes within a student development framework, and to support emergency response for issues impacting residential students’ safety, security, and well‑being.

As an active collaborator within the Division of Campus Life, the director works closely with members of the Residential Life Leadership Team and partners in Campus Life to deliver processes, communications, and a residential experience aligned with Brown’s Liberal Learning Goals for its Open Curriculum and autonomous, self‑directed, and critically‑conscious students.

The director will build and lead a dynamic and engaged professional team whose work is inclusive, efficient, forward‑thinking, and supportive of students and colleagues. The director also contributes to the implementation of the university’s after‑hours on‑call system and collaborates with a wide range of colleagues to respond to student emergencies.

Job Qualifications
  • Master's degree required. Degree in student affairs, college counseling, student personnel, business administration, or equivalent preferred.
  • A minimum of seven years of experience leading a residential facilities and operations unit/team, preferably in a higher education setting. Experience providing leadership within a complex educational operation is preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • Evidence of creative strategic thinking and proven ability to work in a dynamic environment, facilitate organizational change, adjust priorities, collaborate with partners, and improve organizational performance.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other data processing software, such as Google Sheets.
  • Proficiency and experience with housing and information management systems such as Star Rez, Salesforce, Maxient, and Touchnet.
  • Demonstrated success in personnel and fiscal management, including the ability to manage a departmental budget and to hire, supervise, and retain outstanding talent.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, judgment, diplomacy, and discretion skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to interact with diverse constituencies, and can work effectively both individually and as a team member.
