Equipment Operator

Canton, MS

Operator responsible for processing scrap metals and operating heavy and mobile equipment at Ferrous Processing and Trading.

• Ensure adherence to safety standards, including the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE), remove hazards as identified, and maintain cleanliness of the site.
• Load and unload materials from storage, production areas, docks, delivery vehicles, staging areas, or containers using mobile equipment or by hand.
• Sort a variety of recycled materials and metals to separate out high-grade metals and remove any non-conforming metals.
• Operate and maintain heavy equipment including front end loaders, manlifts, yard vehicles, car crushers, shear, and yard switch tractors.
• Operate and maintain a baler; remove finished bales from the baler, weigh, and properly place them in finished goods inventory.
• Operate and maintain mobile equipment such as forklifts, skid steers, manlifts, street sweepers, and water trucks.
• Perform tasks involving physical labor using tools including hand tools, torches, banders, saw zalls, and wire snips.
• Identify scrap, including the grade and type of material and any undesirable elements within the material.
• Position trailers and containers around the yard and empty gaylord boxes as required.
• Switch rail cars and operate locomotives.
• Remove fluids from incoming materials or vehicles as required.
• Perform cleaning duties related to plant equipment and general housekeeping.
• Assist mechanics in the maintenance of plant equipment.
• Interact with customers or drivers to direct or assist them.
• Perform other general laborer tasks as required.
• Perform daily inspections of equipment.

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• High School Diploma or GED; 1+ years of equipment operator experience considered.
• Ability to work independently.
• Basic reading, writing, and math skills.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to maintain accurate records.
• Ability to follow oral and written communication.
• Ability to climb ladders or steps.
• Ability to endure physical and outdoor work daily.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Work cooperatively with employees and the public.
• Will work in an environment exposed to dust, dirt, vibrations, extreme climate, and changes in weather.
