Overview
The Flow Manager’s primary responsibility is to coordinate and expedite throughput activity on behalf of patients who seek care in the Emergency Department. The Flow Manager has final accountability and authority regarding patient flow while reacting to the department’s immediate operational needs.
Responsibilities- Facilitates flow throughout the Emergency Department.
- Resolves conflicts related to operational issues and exercises ultimate decision‑making authority regarding flow.
- Conducts debriefings after conflicts arise to ensure all stakeholders can review concerns.
- Demonstrates respectful communication.
- Manages all resources to support the throughput of patients.
- Evaluates capacity and identifies concerns early.
- Collaborates with RNs, MDs, and the Assistant Clinical Manager to anticipate potential admissions and discharges.
- Coordinates with key departments (Admitting, Transport, Housekeeping, Bed Manager, etc.) to align resources and communication.
- Co‑ordinates with the Assistant Clinical Manager regarding assignment closures/changes and escalations related to patient flow.
- Interfaces with Epicenter to provide throughput and bed‑utilization services, enhancing the patient experience while optimizing flow.
- Supervises and directs the interdisciplinary ED team to ensure timely disposition, discharges, and admission bed requests via the Bed Manager.
- Supervises and directs the ED team to enable smooth and rapid admission to the Surge Pod while eliminating barriers.
- Monitors handoff processes to ensure they are completed promptly to facilitate throughput and care advancement.
- Provides management support to nursing staff, including facilitating discharges and assisting with IV placement.
- Continually assesses the ED’s capacity to care safely and effectively for patients and makes timely recommendations to respond to surge based on patient acuity.
- Leads the coordination of surge responses and ongoing evaluation of the response process.
- Analyzes and provides feedback to the Clinical Manager regarding trends in inpatient acuity and census and their impact on staffing patterns.
- Assumes accountability for evaluating performance under the clinical manager and assistant clinical manager’s delegation/direction.
- Completes the NEDOC score and surge calculator of current department status.
Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure under the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
Qualifications- Graduate of an approved school of nursing; BSN required. MSN preferred. CEN preferred.
- Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Rhode Island.
- Minimum of 6 months nursing experience with demonstrated clinical and leadership skills. 3–5 years of emergency nursing experience preferred.
- Must have triage experience. Leadership experience preferred.
- Continually updates clinical knowledge and skills through formal and informal education and review of current literature.
- Member of the Emergency Nursing Association preferred.
- Works well independently, exhibits sound decision‑making skills, and can handle complex decisions effectively.
- Excellent communication, critical thinking, and strong team‑playing abilities.
- Exercises a high degree of professional judgment within the scope of licensure.
- Possesses interpersonal skills to interact effectively and respectfully with physicians, nurses, and other department members.
- Can manage critical issues related to patient care and changing organizational climate.
Works in various patient‑care environments where exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials may occur.
