Summary
Under general supervision of Clinical Manager (or designee), renders professional nursing care according to established procedures for assigned area of Operating Room. Performs duties of scrub nurse or circulating nurse during surgical procedures. Provides intensive nursing care to post‑operative patients when assigned to post anesthesia area.
Responsibilities- Render professional nursing care to peri‑operative patients including review of charts, administration of medications, starting IVs and hanging blood, electrocardiography, venipuncture, catheterization, defibrillation, and other treatments as prescribed.
- Initiate or participate in life‑saving procedures, including administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation as necessary.
- Plan and implement nursing care plans for assigned patients and use professional judgment to evaluate and modify treatments as circumstances require.
- Review patient charts to ensure pertinent information is available, such as lab reports and operative permits, and confirm all pre‑operative medications and orders have been completed.
- Verify patient identity prior to surgical procedures.
- Perform nursing duties according to the procedures of the assigned area.
- Assist during surgical procedures by preparing and directing others in instrument, equipment, and supply preparation; scrub or circulate on cases; anticipate surgeon needs; maintain sterile techniques; apply dressings; administer medication; and provide total nursing care of patients in the Operating Room.
- When assigned to post‑anesthesia recovery, admit post‑operative patients, check for stability of vital signs, notify anesthesiologist or surgeon as indicated, continuously observe patients, monitor vital signs, ventilate and suction, insert catheters, administer oxygen, and determine when the patient is stable for release.
- Maintain records and charts, reporting pertinent information regarding patient condition, medication given, treatments administered, and other relevant data.
- Assist in directing, orienting, training, and providing functional guidance to surgical technicians and new nursing personnel as requested.
- Maintain and enhance professional expertise through participation in appropriate educational activities.
- Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island or licensure under the Nurse Licensure Compact.
- Professional knowledge of clinical nursing, including sterile techniques, surgical procedures, and the ability to react to life‑threatening situations.
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with patients, physicians, and other hospital personnel.
- Good visual and aural acuity to monitor patient progress.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care throughout the life span, considering aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns.
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
Requires up to one year of combined previous related and on‑the‑job experience in an Operating Room or a Surgical Center.
Work Environment andPhysical Requirements
Worked hours include two consecutive twelve‑hour shifts every weekend in Operating Room and/or post‑anesthesia recovery area. Frequent exposure to anesthetic gases; risk of injury from puncture by surgical instruments, exposure to infectious wounds, burns from autoclaves and electrical equipment. Physical ability for extensive walking and standing; lifting, positioning, and pushing patients on stretchers.
