Summary
The Registered Nurse II demonstrates an advanced level of nursing practice with increased responsibility for management of complex patient care problems, in addition to evidencing Registered Nurse I qualifications and functions. The Registered Nurse II may serve as a clinical consultant to nursing staff, leadership, and others. In addition to precepting nurses for the Registered Nurse I role, the Nurse precepts advanced level practitioners.

- Provides an advanced level of clinical nursing care to patients and their families.
- Evidences competence of Level I functional responsibilities and demonstrates independent decision making skills for clinical care problems for own patients.
- Demonstrates two Registered Nurse II selection/maintenance criteria annually.
- Serves as a consultant in area of expertise to nurses and others regarding advanced clinical nursing practices.
- Assists unit leadership with specific activities related to meeting unit objectives.
- Independently identifies and resolves clinical care problems of a specific population of patients.
- Applies experience‑based expertise in the planning and coordination of patient care, patient care rounds, discharge planning rounds, joint case presentations, and grand rounds.
- Provides assistance as requested about complex patient care issues.
- Develops and implements patient teaching guidelines in area of expertise (in collaboration with Education and Research staff) and develops related materials to achieve objectives.
- Initiates, plans, and presents unit‑level clinical conferences, in‑service education, etc., and presents information about area of expertise at formal seminars and workshops.
- Precepts new graduates and experienced oriented and advanced level practitioners.
- Works with nursing faculty members to integrate advanced clinical practice into students' clinical practicum for assigned patients.
- Plans and manages issue‑specific Quality Assurance projects in conjunction with the unit leadership group, such as unit prevalence studies and evaluation of quality scores, and participates in the formulation of actions to correct related clinical problems.
- Identifies the need for new or revised procedures/standards relating to area of clinical expertise and author/h validity standards/procedures approved for development.
- Utilizes clinical research findings related to area of expertise: participates in nursing studies, attends and participates in research round tables, coordinates research roundtable presentations in conjunction with appropriate research consultants, and provides information to unit leadership with recommendations for improvement in nursing practice/patient care.
- Demonstrates continuing education in area of clinical specialty and meets standards of specialty organization if required.
- Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing, or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.
- Advanced educational preparation in relevant field; where appropriate, certification through a national organization.
- Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
- Membership in a professional organization preferred.
- Excellent performance of Registered Nurse I behaviors, as evidenced by performance appraisals documentation.
- Demonstrates a minimum of two Registered Nurse II criteria.
One and one half years of relevant clinical experience. At least 6 months must be within the Department of Nursing.
Work Environment andPhysical Requirements
General hospital environment with occasional stressful conditions associated with patient care. Position requires frequent standing, walking, and sitting.
