SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager (or designee), implement, supervise and evaluate nursing care using a nursing process and in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. From admission to discharge, plan with consideration of the aging process throughout the lifespan, including all developmental stages and cultural patterns.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide direct patient care and lead by delegating, supervising and participating in safe nursing care activities.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of patient care and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team, patient, family and community services regarding patient care outcomes and discharge planning.
  • Assess and provide appropriate teaching based on patient and family needs.
  • Participate in unit-based quality improvement and research activities.
  • Utilize all available resources to provide quality, cost‑effective patient care.
  • Meet and maintain clinical competencies measured by pre‑determined credentialing standards, mandatory/safety education, and completion of Basic Life Support and ACLS/PALS as appropriate.
  • Identify growth needs and participate in educational opportunities and professional organizations.
  • Serve as a role model/preceptor to new graduate nurses and less experienced personnel.
  • Assume charge nurse responsibility for the patient care unit as delegated.
COMPETENCIES
  • Process Level I:
    Wandering Level II – personal belongings, intake process, processing patients before unit entry, scrubs, hospital socks, vital signs, breathalyzer/blood glucose if needed.
  • Unit safety – suicide risk assessment, safety checks with patient location every 15 minutes, limiting visitors, contraband checks, environmental checks every 2 hours.
  • Education – D‑pod, Net Learning Modules, Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Training, Competency Testing (Wanding, Safety/Environmental Rounds, BLS).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.
  • Baccalaureate in Nursing preferred.
  • Current licensure to practice in RI and demonstration of knowledge and skills for care throughout the lifespan.
  • NIHSS Certification within 3 months of hire; 8 hours of continuing stroke education required annually.
  • Certified Wound Nurse preferred (American Board of Wound Management certification preferred, Certified Wound Specialist (CWS) preferred, or Certified Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse (CWOCN) preferred).
  • Minimum of two years clinical experience in medical‑surgical nursing, ambulatory or surgical services in a hospital setting; outpatient high‑volume clinic experience preferred.
  • Positive, caring and customer‑service‑oriented attitude.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Visual and aural ability to monitor patient status; physical ability to assist in lifting and positioning patients; exposure to patient care environment; extensive walking and standing; lifting, positioning, and pushing patients on stretchers.

UNIT SPECIFIC

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Full range of body motion; lift a minimum of 50 lbs; vision abilities include close, distance, and color vision; clear speech and hearing; ability to stand, sit, walk, bend, lean, and squat for long periods; maintain dexterity when pulling, pushing, and gripping carts and stretchers; perform CPR; perform all physical job duties accurately in a fast‑paced environment with frequent interruptions.
