Summary
The Manager – Research Nurse Oncology reports to the Director, Brown University Health Oncology Clinical Research (LOCR). Under general supervision coordinates the research activities across all Brown University Health Cancer Institute sites, provided by department professional nursing staff. The role includes oversight of all clinical activities related to research conduct, including but not limited to the oversight of nurse practitioners, research nurses, and research nurse coordinators.
The manager identifies, recruits, and follows up with patients participating in clinical research studies, collaborates with physicians and other health‑care team members, promotes clinical research studies, collects data, monitors programs, and ensures adherence to established protocols. The manager may coordinate data collection involving research teams from other institutions, participate in data analysis, and prepare papers for publication.
- Uses benchmark and best practice data to identify core components of professional nursing practice in oncology research.
- Implements a best practice model in the department and ensures nursing practice meets the standard.
- Develops policies and procedures that validate best practice, reviews policies annually for benchmark data, and monitors research activities for compliance.
- Participates in the identification of quality metrics for the department, particularly focusing on the integrity of the nursing process in clinical research.
- Interviews, selects, evaluates, and provides guidance to research nursing and related staff.
- Directs work of subordinates to gather data and prepare and maintain records for research investigatory studies.
- Assists research physicians in identifying patients meeting inclusion criteria for specific clinical research studies and ensures protocol eligibility requirements are met.
- Obtains informed consent from patients and may write study‑specific forms for submission to the Institutional Review Board.
- Establishes study records for each participant, abstracts pertinent information from medical records, monitors adherence to protocol, and maintains regular contact with patients and the health‑care team.
- Prepares schemas appropriate to specific study protocols depicting concise criteria for use in monitoring processes.
- Alerts physicians and other team members to laboratory studies, follow‑up data, and other due items.
- Abstracts information from data collection sheets to determine treatment response and identifies abnormalities or problems associated with treatment protocols.
- Recommends protocol revisions, assessments, and reporting of ongoing studies, and reviews new proposals.
- Maintains liaison with pharmaceutical companies, clinical centers, and other study participants to gather and exchange information.
- Serves as central resource to coordinate research data collection from multiple outside institutions participating in investigatory studies.
- Ensures timely and accurate receipt and processing of information for analysis by investigators.
- Researches literature to assess related findings and assists in writing papers for publication.
- May perform duties of a Research Nurse with direct patient contact to administer drugs, obtain specimens, perform EKGs, or related assessment or care functions.
- Maintains and enhances professional expertise through participation in educational activities.
- Sets strategic vision for the area according to standards of excellence and designs strategies to support organizational goals.
- Sets unit‑based goals and objectives consistent with overall departmental and institutional perspectives, monitors progress, and schedules regular nursing meetings to provide staff with operational information.
- Develops employees to their fullest potential by identifying educational opportunities and growth experiences, monitoring, intervening, and interacting when appropriate.
- Ensures knowledge of accrediting and regulatory agency requirements and monitors compliance.
