APP- Inpatient Vascular Surgery

General Summary

The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant will provide the surgical patient and their family with continuity of care in the inpatient setting, act as an integral part of the surgical service, and serve as an educator and liaison to other health care providers across the care continuum.

• Provide care for surgical patients on the surgical service from inpatient settings (both ICU and convalescent wards) to outpatient settings.
• Conduct history and physical exams, order and interpret lab tests, prescribe medications, develop and monitor patient treatment plans, and make referrals to other specialists.
• Prescribe and order appropriate treatment modalities.
• Perform minor procedures such as peripheral IV access, central venous access, PICC line placement, repair of lacerations, incision/drainage/washout/debridement of wounds, tube thoracostomy, tracheostomy changes, arterial catheter placement, removal of drains/sutures/staples, placement and removal of N‑G tubes/N‑D tubes/foley catheters, and assist with surgery in accordance with institutional processes.
• Collaborate with unit teachers and clinical nurse specialists to provide education to nurses in the patient care units.
• Serve as a preceptor for medical students, NP, or PA students.
• Treat each person with respect and dignity.
• Participate in research studies and projects.
• Obtain Human Subjects Protection training and training in HIPAA compliance and all applicable state and federal privacy laws.
• Establish annual development goals with physicians on the surgical service.
• Prepare health education materials for patients and their families.
• Attend continued education offerings and obtain all continuing education credits required to maintain licensure.
• Maintain ACLS certification.
• Participate in multidisciplinary meetings relating to surgery.

• Master’s Degree.
• Current Rhode Island licensure as a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (for NP) or Physician Assistant (for PA).
• Current DEA licensure.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
