Overview

Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager (or designee) and within hospital and departmental policies and procedures, the professional registered nurse acts as a patient advocate in the application of the nursing process. All essential functions reflect the age-specific needs of the patients. Responsibilities
  • Recognizes and reports deviations from patient or established norms and documents nursing interventions.
  • Reports patient responses to treatment and assists with planning and adjustments as needed.
  • Provides basic comfort and support according to patient needs.
  • Fosters patient and family participation in achieving optimum functioning and activities of daily living.
  • Sets priorities in individual patient assignments and seeks guidance when necessary.
  • Identifies and assesses emergency situations; initiates appropriate response and plans for potential needs during emergencies.
  • Defines nursing diagnoses and expected patient outcomes; may modify the plan of care accordingly and documents assessments and outcomes.
  • Implements nursing interventions and evaluates outcomes; documents changes to the plan of care.
  • Maintains knowledge of contemporary nursing practice within the Rhode Island Nurse Practice Act; participates in training to maintain current knowledge.
  • Utilizes established protocols and collaborates with the health team to facilitate therapeutic interventions and desired patient outcomes.
  • Participates in quality improvement and risk management efforts; attends unit-based or hospital meetings as needed.
  • Works cooperatively to support patient care management; integrates physical and nursing assessments in developing a comprehensive plan of care.
  • Follows documentation guidelines and maintains quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Demonstrates self-direction in advancing clinical and professional competency and provides care to patients across the life span with cultural awareness.
  • Provides functional guidance to LPNs, CNAs, and other licensed personnel as required.
  • May assume shift charge responsibility on an assigned unit, including unit activity overview, equitable delegation, bed and patient assignments, and assigning primary patients to staff.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Graduate of a nursing program;
    Baccalaureate in Nursing preferred; current Rhode Island RN license; understanding of the Nurse Practice Act and professional nursing standards; knowledge to provide care across the life span with cultural sensitivity.
  • Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) upon hire.
Experience
  • New graduates should develop general proficiency as a staff nurse within three months of employment. For specialty units, relevant nursing experience is preferred.
Work Environment and

Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged standing and walking; exposure to patient care elements; may be required to lift/turn patients and equipment; repeated bending, squatting, and stooping.

Pay Range

$35.70-$71.40
