Overview

Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager (or designee), implement, supervise and evaluate the nursing care of each patient using a nursing process and in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Provide care from admission to discharge with consideration of the aging process across the life span, including developmental stages and cultural patterns. Responsibilities
  • Provide direct nursing care to patients with complex needs and ensure safe delivery of patient care.
  • Implement the steps of the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation) and coordinate with the health care team.
  • Delegate and supervise nursing care activities performed by personnel assisting in nursing care (e.g., Licensed Practical Nurses, Nursing Student Associates, Certified Nursing Assistants, Technicians, Unit Assistants, Unit Service Coordinators).
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of patient care activities and ensure compliance with standards.
  • Manage implementation of therapeutic/diagnostic orders per policy; communicate patient responses and condition changes to physicians; keep families informed of care status.
  • Coordinate discharge planning for patients and families using hospital and community resources; provide patient and family teaching per standards and patient teaching guidelines.
  • Maintain patient and family confidentiality per hospital policy; serve as an active patient and family advocate.
  • Document according to policy and procedure; ensure emergency and safety conduct, maintain Basic Life Support certification, respond to cardiopulmonary arrest, and initiate CPR as needed.
  • Adhere to universal precautions, infection control measures, and review fire, disaster, and infection control procedures; participate in emergency/code situations and check emergency equipment.
  • Utilize assistive devices when available; maintain an environment conducive to patient comfort and safety; report equipment needs and use side rails and restraints in accordance with policy.
  • Adhere to constant observation protocols as assigned; demonstrate professional conduct and engage in lifelong learning; meet credentialing requirements; maintain reliable attendance and timely work completion.
  • Participate in unit activities, orientation of team members, staff education, and development of annual goals with Clinical Manager; contribute to performance appraisals as determined by leadership.
  • Assume charge position responsibilities for the patient care unit as delegated; collaborate with faculty and students to meet learner objectives within the prescribed plan of care.
  • Stay current with professional nursing, medical, technical, and technological developments; collaborate to implement clinical advancements and research findings into practice.
  • Consult with nurses with advanced clinical expertise as needed (e.g., RN II, Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Educator, Unit Teacher).
  • Monitor patients during Conscious Sedation per policy and post-procedure for complications; assist physicians during endoscopic procedures, including medication preparation and handling instruments/supplies as directed.
  • Ensure necessary equipment and supplies are set up in procedure rooms; monitor inventory of medical supplies and equipment and maintain adequate levels per guidelines; assist with cleaning and disinfecting endoscopes and accessories; perform specimen testing as directed following handling guidelines; adhere to Endoscopy Department policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing, or licensure as an RN in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Basic knowledge of caring for patients with attention to aging processes, human development, and cultural patterns; current RN licensure in Rhode Island.
