Mental Health And Behavioral Health Sciences Nursing Assistant

The Mental Health and Behavioral Health Sciences Nursing Assistant provides care to Veterans with a substance use and mental health disorders. The Nursing Assistant is responsible and accountable when providing direct patient care. The Nursing Assistant assists the interdisciplinary team with the coordination of care, focused on patient transition through the continuum of care and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction.

Major duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists the interdisciplinary team in collecting health information such as medical histories and behavioral health performance measures.
  • Makes observations of subtle changes in patient's condition such as behavioral or mood shifts and takes action to ensure safety of the Veteran and staff and reports changes to the RN and/or supervisor.
  • Observes Veterans and collects urine toxicology drug screens per policies and procedures.
  • Conducts electrocardiograms as directed by nursing staff or licensed independent practitioner per policy and procedures.
  • Recognizes the patient's autonomy and promotes independence by means of respect, limit setting, and individualized treatment.
  • Documents observations and patient responses using the correct templates and tools in CPRS.
  • Manages disruptive patient behaviors and appropriately intervenes and requests assistance from other members of the team.
  • Provides administrative support to interdisciplinary team by conducting patient outreach attempts and other administrative duties.
  • Performs and assists with data collection, compilation, and tracking of data and statistical information.
  • Actively participates in Interdisciplinary Team Meetings.
  • Receptive to constructive feedback and accepts assistance in identifying learning needs; identifies own deficiencies and takes action to improve own performance.
  • Completes all mandatory trainings in a timely manner by the requested deadline.

Work Schedule:

Full-Time, Mon-Fri, 8:00am-4:30pm.

Pay:
Competitive salary and regular salary increases when setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.

Parental Leave:
After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy:
After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66

Retirement:
Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Insurance:
Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
