SUMMARY
Under general supervision, but following established policies and procedures, performs scientific investigative research in areas related to patient care. Research literature in the field, participates in the design of experimental protocols and develops new procedures to carry out established research objectives. Interviews patients to gather information, prepares and maintains study records, enters data via computer, performs statistical analyses of resultant data, and participates in qualitative/quantitative analyses.
May assist in writing presentations and papers for publication based on the research performed, perform EKGs and vital signs during research-based monitoring tests, and may also perform blood spinning and shipment of blood and tissue samples as required by protocol. - Conduct experiments according to established protocols and research methodology using in‑vivo techniques on animal and/or human serum.
- Participate in the design of experimental protocols to achieve the scientific objectives of the research project.
- Develop research methodologies within the parameters of experimental protocols and research objectives to allow quantitative and qualitative evaluation and interpretation of data obtained.
- Gather, tabulate, graph, develop explanatory charts, and analyze data using statistical methodology.
- Use computer programming to assist in the data analysis.
- Participate in the interpretation of results through conferences with supervisors and other researchers to review data compared to hypotheses and research methodology in cases of inexplicable data.
- Review all literature pertaining to research being conducted in the scientific area of interest.
- Assist in writing presentations and papers for publication based on research performed.
- Review medical records to abstract information necessary to complete forms and request and follow up on missing data such as laboratory test results.
- Regularly monitor adherence to protocol; alert physicians when laboratory tests ordered have not been performed, medication protocols not followed, etc.
- Collect and organize patient data into appropriate format to facilitate data entry.
- Create, modify, and maintain study databases to meet project needs.
- Perform computer‑assisted statistical analysis such as multiple antecedent variables, linear regression, frequencies, cross‑tabulation, and the like.
- Write non‑complex programs using computer‑compatible language to reformat information and create new files.
- Prepare and maintain related graphs and charts or results of data gathered.
- Participate in quantitative/qualitative analyses of resultant information.
- Provide functional guidance to subordinate research staff assigned to the project, clarify protocols, resolve issues, ensure adherence, and assist in developing their professional skills in reviewing and interpreting statistical trends.
- Recommend modifications to research protocols based upon initial findings.
- Maintain and enhance professional expertise through educational opportunities and participation in related teams and conferences.
- Perform research‑based EKGs, vital signs, blood spinning and shipping of blood and tissue products in accordance with protocol specifications.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Applied or Life Sciences or related area, including courses in research methodologies and microcomputer systems.
- Two to three years progressively more responsible and related experience in the research field.
- Experience demonstrates effective working knowledge of statistics, computer programming, research methodology, and an in‑depth knowledge of the scientific field in which the research is being conducted.
- Provides functional guidance to subordinate research staff assigned to the project.
