Summary

The Pediatric Health Disparities Research Program at Rhode Island Hospital/Brown Medical School seeks a Spanish-fluent full-time clinical research assistant for pediatric behavioral health research studies. These innovative projects utilize a multi-method in-depth approaches to characterize asthma sleep patterns and sleep settings of urban elementary-school-aged children in combination with biological measures that may differ based on children’s ethnic background and may contribute to asthma outcomes.

These studies are taking place through the Childhood Asthma Research Program (CARP) lab which conducts research studies examining pediatric health disparities and developing interventions to improve health and sleep outcomes in children and youth. Faculty supervisors are members of the Brown Clinical Psychology Training Consortium and actively involved in research and clinical work with children.

Specific tasks will include assistance with research participant recruitment and scheduling, administering semi-structured interviews and questionnaires to children and their parents, preparing and summarizing study results and other tasks integral to research. Some amount of involvement in other studies in the lab will occur on an ad hoc basis. The research assistant may have the opportunity to participate in generating presentations and reports as the data permit.

Our research protocols have been adapted to administer remotely while COVID-19 related social distancing measures are required.

Responsibilities
  • Collect data in the form of questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, specialized electronic monitoring devices and biological samples (e.g., blood and saliva samples)
  • Data organization and data entry
  • Assisting with coordination of each aspect of the project including administrative tasks and communication with all research team members, school personnel and other community members
  • Coordinating meetings, taking meeting minutes, documenting study decisions
  • Assistance with tracking and reporting study milestones
  • Lab organization
  • Assisting with preparing conference presentations, manuscripts and grant proposals
  • Requirements
  • A bachelor’s in psychology, public health or a related field
  • Must be fully bilingual in spoken and written English and Spanish
  • Ability to commit to the position for a minimum of 2 years
  • Experience with research concepts and techniques including qualitative interviewing and quantitative analysis
  • A talent for multi-tasking and an aptitude for thinking on numerous levels simultaneously
  • Must have a reliable car (mileage reimbursement provided)
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends to support staff and events and be on call as needed
  • Ability to function autonomously in a collaborative interdisciplinary team involving research, medical and mental health care
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated strong administrative skills and a strong attention to detail
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to work harmoniously with diverse groups of individuals
  • Experience working in an ethnically, culturally and racially diverse environment
