SUMMARY:

Reports to a departmental director and is responsible for direction of the research and administrative activities of a research laboratory focused on stress, trauma, and resilience. Prepares, writes and presents research papers and grants. Provides consultation within area of expertise to individuals both internal and external to the hospital.

Responsibilities
  • Prepares, writes and presents papers for publication as principal investigator on research projects focused on stress, trauma, and resilience.
  • Identifies internal and external funding opportunities and collaborates with the COBRE Center for Stress, Trauma, and Resilience (STAR), the Center for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine, and the Brown University Health Office of Research on grant applications.
  • Develops research methodology, ensures accurate collection and analysis of data, and interprets data using statistical methodology.
  • Assumes primary responsibility for developing, communicating and ensuring compliance with policies and procedures for research and administrative functions, including compliance with IRB and IACUC committees.
  • Supervises postdoctoral fellows, research assistants and other lab personnel – including hiring, training, assigning work, providing feedback, evaluating performance, and disciplinarian actions when necessary.
  • Participates in the development of a coordinated budget and may administer the operational budget.
  • Participates in Hospital and Department committees (research and non‑research).
  • Engages with individuals internal and external to the Hospital to provide professional consultation within the area of expertise and to exchange information.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or M.D. in the appropriate scientific field and in-depth knowledge of the scientific field in which research is being performed.
  • Supervisory and administrative skills to direct a small group of research assistants.
  • Interpersonal skills to interface both externally and internally with the Hospital.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to present to diverse audiences.
  • One year of experience in research.
  • Works independently within the department’s policies and practices, referring complex problems to the supervisor when necessary.
  • Supervisory responsibility for grant‑funded research staff as needed.
