SUMMARY
The Clinical Research Financial Analyst resides within the Brown University Health Office of Cancer Research (LOCR), under the direction of a Department Research Finance Manager. The position supports and mentors entry‑level and mid‑level colleagues with assigned activities and may be assigned any of the following pre‑award or post‑award activities for a portfolio of clinical research studies:
- calendar builds in OnCore (clinical trial management system)
- coverage analysis
- budget development and negotiation
- sponsor invoicing and sponsored account invoicing
- accounts receivable activities
- study closeout activities
- grant applications and management
- patient charge segregation

RESPONSIBILITIESThe Clinical Research Financial Analyst is responsible for the financial management of assigned clinical research projects, including planning, developing, monitoring, and coordinating departmental research administrative activities. The analyst collaborates with faculty, researchers, and institutional units to prepare sponsored research projects and manage both sponsored and institutional funds across adult and pediatric hematology‑oncology studies.
Key responsibilities include:
- Serving as a point person for smooth coordination, communication, and problem resolution among departmental, research administration, faculty, divisional leaders, and other hospital and university departments.
- Pre‑award management: facilitating study start‑up activities, developing calendars and coverage analyses, negotiating budgets, executing clinical trial agreements, requesting letters of collaboration, and preparing grant proposals in compliance with sponsor guidelines and Brown University Health standards.
- Post‑award management: preparing and submitting invoices to sponsors, tracking payments, updating budgets and MCAs for study amendments, finalizing budgets with the Office of Research, monitoring application review processes, and responding to sponsor reporting requirements.
- Ensuring compliance with institutional and sponsor regulations, including reviewing Notice of Award restrictions, maintaining financial controls, calculating overhead and fringe benefit charges, purchasing equipment, and generating detailed financial reports.
- Maintaining confidential records of salary expenses and disbursements, communicating with review committees to stay current on new requirements, and preparing reports as requested by managers.
Other duties may be assigned as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation:
Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, or a related area, or equivalent experience, with at least 10 years of relevant research administration experience.
Experience:
Three to five years of experience in a research or academic environment, including federal and non‑federal funding, grant application processes, and regulations from local, federal, hospital, and independent agencies. Oncology clinical research experience preferred.
Skills:
Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to interact with persons from diverse backgrounds (MDs, PhDs, research and administrative staff); thorough knowledge of microcomputers, peripheral equipment, and networks; proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Windows; and ability to learn specific research access programs.
