Overview
Clinical Research Financial Specialist – Brown University Health Office of Cancer Research (BHOCR). The role reports to a Department Research Finance Manager and provides high‑level support, mentorship, and leadership for pre‑award and post‑award activities across a portfolio of clinical research studies.
ResponsibilitiesMust self‑manage complex research portfolios for multiple laboratories and Disease Centers, providing financial oversight and guidance to faculty, researchers, and cross‑functional teams.
- Pre‑award: facilitate study start‑up activities, including calendar builds in OnCore, coverage analysis, budget negotiations, and trial agreement execution. Generate Letters of Collaboration, identify funding opportunities, and prepare grant proposals (excluding scientific content).
- Post‑award: prepare and submit invoices to sponsors, manage contract payment requests, track vendor payments, update budgets and coverage analysis for amendments, and finalize award setup in a timely manner.
- Financial management: monitor sponsor restrictions, grant balances, and funds allocation; calculate overhead and fringe benefits; maintain disbursement records; generate spreadsheets and financial reports.
- Compliance: ensure adherence to internal policies and external regulations; maintain communications with review committees; conduct billing review for clinical research participants in Epic/Life Chart.
- Leadership: mentor entry‑level and mid‑level colleagues, lead training and educational efforts, represent the department at institutional committees, and collaborate with central offices (Research Finance, Accounts Payable, Research Administration, Special Funds, Grants & Contracts, Clinical Trials Office).
- Advanced expertise in financial management of sponsored research across federal, industry, foundation, donor, institutional, chargeback, and clinical trial funding types.
- Strong communication skills – able to interact with MDs, PhDs, and diverse administrative staff.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Windows) and relevant research administration systems.
- Ability to interpret and apply internal and external regulations, ensuring compliance and timely reporting.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, or related field, or equivalent experience with at least ten years of relevant research administration experience.
Experience:
Minimum 10 years in a research/academic environment, including federal and non‑federal grant processes, regulations, and oncology clinical research experience preferred. Must demonstrate thorough knowledge of microcomputers, peripheral equipment, networks, and research access programs.
