Job SummaryUnder the direct supervision of the Traffic Signal Maintenance Foreman, the Traffic Engineer, or his/her designee is responsible for performing skilled work installing, inspecting, maintaining, altering, and repairing traffic signal electrical lines, equipment, and apparatus, both in the field and in the repair shop; and related work as required.
This position is first shift 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.
Duties & Responsibilities- Installs, inspects, regulates, and repairs all types of traffic control signals.
- Installs, inspects, and repairs electromechanical and solid state type traffic controllers, including, but not limited to, circuit boards, meter cabinets, poles, pedestals, mast arms and foundations/bases, pull-boxes, junction boxes, hand-hole rings, wiring, conductors, detectors, flashers, relays, load switches, terininal and backboard wiring, and all traffic signal appurtenances as required.
- Responsible for controller maintenance, adjustment, timing, signal head cleaning, painting, repairing, and bulb/lens replacement.
- Installs, inspects, regulates, and repairs electrical wires and cables (including those up to 240 volts), overhead circuits, and pole lines.
- Operates various electrical equipment as required including, but not limited to, amp meters, voltage meters, watt meters, and oscilloscopes.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Must possess and maintain a valid “Class B” Journeyman Electrician’s License issued by the State of Rhode Island Board of Examiners of Electricians.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques, tools, equipment, and materials used in the traffic signal trade and skill in their application,
- Working knowledge of safety codes enforced by the State of Rhode Island.
- Ability to read and work from electrical wiring diagrams and blueprints.
- Ability to handle wires up to 240 volts.
- Ability to understand and cany out complex oral and written instructions.
- Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
