HVAC MECHANIC

Summary

Inspects, repairs and performs all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on the hospital heating, air conditioning, and ventilating systems and related equipment. Responds to all trade problems for the Facilities Management Department on off‑shifts and weekends.

• Make daily inspections of all pumps, air‑handling units, refrigeration units, and air‑conditioning/ventilation units in all machinery spaces.
• Inspect rooftop cooling towers throughout the hospital.
• Make spot repairs and adjustments to systems as necessary or notify the HVAC Operating Engineer of any problems (e.g., downed equipment, floods, leaks, or other irregularities). Report any hazard to public safety on hospital property.
• Repair malfunctioning equipment, including replacement of fan belts, pumps, seals, bearings, motors, and repair of water and steam coil leaks.
• Repair and recharge refrigeration and air‑conditioning systems.
• Record readings, repairs, and adjustments for HVAC controls such as pneumatic discharge controllers and thermostats.
• Record readings from HVAC equipment, including pressure, temperature, water, steam, and all monthly electrical readings in all buildings of the complex.
• Perform routine maintenance as scheduled on all equipment such as steam absorption units, air‑handling units, pumps, and others.
• Assist in the installation, removal, and storage of heating, ventilation, and air‑conditioning equipment in the hospital and comply with CFC regulations regarding refrigerant removal, storage, and disposal.
• Respond to all calls for repairs on plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems, including off‑shifts and weekends.
• Respond to all fire alarms to operate elevators for Fire Department personnel.
• Assist with repair of all incoming city water mains and valves in all buildings and the grounds in case of a ruptured line.
• Maintain a daily log of service requests and time and materials expended.
• Utilize a computerized work order system for researching equipment histories, parts requirements, and other department data.

• Basic Knowledge:
  Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air‑conditioning, and related systems within a large hospital complex.
• Knowledge generally acquired through completion of one to two years of formal training in heating, ventilation, and refrigeration or an equivalent program.
• Requires City of Providence Stationary Operations License or Refrigeration Operators License, and the State of Rhode Island Refrigeration Journeyman License.

  Completion of three years of an accredited Apprenticeship HVAC Program.
• Supervisory Responsibility:
  None.

Pay Range: $38.18–$47.46 per hour.
