Summary
The General Maintenance Worker reports to the Manager Facilities Planning and Operations Management. Under general supervision and within Brown University Health policies and procedures, performs routine repair and maintenance functions at Brown University Health outreach sites. - Receives work orders for a wide range of repair and maintenance requests at various Brown University Health Affiliate off-site locations.
- May perform rebuilding or repairing furniture, walls, windows and frames, medical exhibits, and installation or replacement of countertops, floor and ceiling tiles, fixtures, drywall, handrails, locks, hardware, ceramic tiles, wall hangings and similar projects.
- Installs, repairs, and adjusts keyboard trays.
- Removes and replaces HIPPA bins.
- Plastering, painting, staining, varnishing, hanging wallpaper, applying sealant, decorating, and protecting interior surfaces, woodwork, trimmings, furniture and equipment.
- Moves and relocates office furniture and equipment.
- Resolves minor plumbing and electrical problems that do not require a licensed trades person; installs, repairs, and maintains plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, faucets, eye wash stations, emergency showers and related equipment; installs or replaces bulbs and batteries in emergency lighting fixtures; checks breakers, plugs and switches for appropriate operation.
- Performs initial evaluation of complex problems to determine if a contractor is required.
- Completes inspections of fire extinguishers and emergency lights.
- Completes grounds work as directed, which may include picking up trash, sweeping curb and dumpster areas, and maintaining landscaping beds and other areas.
- Assists with snow and ice removal at all off‑site locations using equipment provided by Brown University Health.
- Communicates with customers about the schedule to complete the work request.
- Completes basic records such as work orders, requisitions and vehicle inspection sheets.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School Graduate or equivalent GED with vocational courses in HVAC or another building trade.
- Certification in construction or building specialty is preferred.
- Knowledge of all phases of maintenance and repair trades is essential.
- Minimum two to three years experience in a journeyman level of a skilled labor position.
- Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor field environments; travel from site to site; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain.
- Work environment is informal, team‑oriented, having both routine and variable tasks with variable pace and pressure.
- Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to walk and stand for prolonged periods; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach and twist; push, pull, lift or carry moderate to heavy weights; operate specialized hand and power tools and equipment; operate assigned equipment and vehicles; verbally communicate and exchange information.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license, a dependable vehicle, proof of insurance and a good driving record.
$20.96 per hour – $34.61 per hour
