Summary
Under direct supervision of a licensed HVAC mechanic, the HVAC apprentice inspects, repairs and performs all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance to the hospital heating, air conditioning and ventilating systems and related equipment. Responds to all trade problems for the Facilities Management Department.

- Makes daily inspections of all pumps, air‑handling units, refrigeration units, air conditioning and ventilation units in all machinery spaces; inspects rooftop cooling towers throughout the hospital.
- Makes spot repairs and adjustments to systems as necessary and/or notifies the HVAC Operating Engineer of any problems, e.g., downed equipment, floods, leaks, or any irregularities regarding HVAC equipment and public safety on hospital property.
- Makes necessary repairs to malfunctioning equipment such as replacement of fan belts, replacement and rebuilding pumps, replacing seals, bearings, motors, repairing water and steam coil leaks, and repairing and recharging refrigeration and air‑conditioning systems.
- Records readings, repairs and adjusts controls on HVAC systems including pneumatic discharge controllers and thermostats.
- Records readings from HVAC equipment including pressure, temperature, water, steam and all monthly electrical readings in all buildings of the complex.
- Performs routine maintenance as scheduled on all equipment such as steam absorption units, air‑handling units, pumps, etc.
- Assists in the installation, removal and storage of heating, ventilation and air‑conditioning equipment in the hospital and complies with CFC regulations regarding removal, storage and disposal of all refrigerants.
- Responds to all calls for repairs on all plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems, including off‑shifts and weekends.
- Responds to all fire alarms.
- Responds to repair of all incoming city water mains and valves in all buildings and on the grounds in case of a ruptured line.
- Maintains daily log of requests for service work performed and time and materials expended; utilizes computerized work order system for researching equipment histories, parts requirements and other department data.
- Is part of the snow team and is required to remove snow by powered and non‑powered means; may be required to work outside the regular work schedule, including weekends and holidays.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- High School Diploma.
- Basic computer skills with ability to navigate the Microsoft Office Suite, the internet, and maintenance management software.
- Good driving record; must maintain the appropriate valid driver’s license to operate motor vehicles as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and the company’s Fleet Risk Control Policy.
- Ability to install, troubleshoot and repair heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air‑conditioning and related systems within a large hospital complex.
- Knowledge generally acquired through completion of HVAC training program.
- Certificate of completion from a Rhode Island accredited HVAC or Refrigeration training program per licensing guidelines.
- Must obtain Refrigeration 1 license within 6 months of completion of 10,000 hours.
- Will work under direct supervision of a licensed HVAC mechanic.
$18.00 – $25.82
