Position: TRANSPORTATION ELECTRICIAN(DOT

Transportation Electrician (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). the Department of Transportation  to inspect and/or maintain electrical, traffic signaling and lighting, and telecommunications installations in conjunction with statewide highway construction, maintenance or traffic operations programs; to ensure that work in progress is completed and has been performed according to the construction design plans and specifications, and maintenance specifications; to inspect and maintain electrical installations in order to ensure that the requirements of the National Electric Code and the National Electric Safety Code are being followed;

and to do related work as required.

Works under the general supervision of a superior with some latitude for the use of independent judgement; work is verified by review of reports and field inspections. May supervise the work of subordinates who are assigned to assist.

Illustrative examples of work performed include:

  • Inspecting and/or maintaining electrical, traffic signaling and lighting, and telecommunications installations in conjunction with statewide highway construction, maintenance or traffic operations programs.
  • Inspecting and/or maintaining the installation of street lighting poles and fixtures to insure their proper wiring and their proper grounding and fusing.
  • Inspecting and/or maintaining transformer vaults and determining wire sizes, types of insulation, voltage capacity, breaking capacity of circuit breakers, and the interrupting capacity of these breakers.
  • Inspecting and/or maintaining conduits and ducts for size, and when installed underground, for the proper angle of inclination.
  • Inspecting and/or maintaining traffic lights and their controllers to determine that the equipment is in accordance with specifications and properly installed, wired within the proper types and sizes of conductors, and that the controllers are gas sealed from any adjacent manholes.
  • Collecting data from test runs on electrical equipment, including varied types of metering equipment, ammeters, voltmeters, watt meters, and illuminometers.
  • Notifying the engineer in charge of the project when situations arise involving failure to follow plans and/or specifications.
  • Preparing reports on work in progress and final acceptance of installation constructed by the contractor, and other maintenance reports.
  • Doing related work as required.

Required qualifications for appointment include:

Knowledge, skills and capacities: A thorough knowledge of the National Electric Code and the National Electric Safety Code; a thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques, equipment and materials used in the electrician trade; a working knowledge of electronics; the ability to read and interpret complex electrical wiring plans and specifications; the ability to prepare reports concerning defects in electrical installations;

the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, superiors and electrical contractors; and related capacities and abilities.

Education and experience:

Completion of senior high school or vocation/technical school of recognized standing; and at least two years employment as a Licensed Electrician which involved interpreting complex electrical construction wiring diagrams, or inspecting, installing or maintaining electrical systems. Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

Special requirements:
At the time of appointment, must possess at least a Class B Electrician's License issued by the Rhode Island Board of Examiners of Electricians and must maintain such license as a condition of continued employment. Must be physically qualified to perform assigned duties as evidenced by a physician's certificate.
