Bus Monitor

Position Details- Starting Pay: $16.00 per hour.

- High School Diploma or GED preferred
- Must have stamina to stand, walk, go up and down stairs, bend and sit for long periods, mobility to escort students across streets, ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to traffic, vision to read printed materials and license plates, hearing and speech to communicate in person.
- Knowledge of basic safety rules, basic safe driving rules and procedures, and techniques for communicating with children and adults.
- Ability to obtain attention and cooperation of school children and other pedestrians, observe and record license numbers and incident details accurately, follow oral and written directions, and communicate and act effectively with co-workers, the supervisor, and the general public.
- Must be able to read, write and speak English.
- The Substitute Bus Monitor works under the supervision of the Transportation Supervisor of Providence Schools.
- Provide child pedestrian safety by facilitating safe passage of school children across high traffic streets and intersections.
- Take daily attendance and communicate any concerns with parents.
- Commit to being a Bus Monitor on a bus each school day before and after school hours.
- Assemble children behind curb lines awaiting traffic lulls or signal changes.
- Interrupt traffic and escort children into the streets allowing them to cross safely.
- Instruct children in proper procedures for safe street crossing.
- Observe vehicle movements and safety permitting, record license numbers of vehicles whose drivers jeopardize safe street crossing and report them to the Police Department.
- Report students who do not adhere to safe transportation procedures to appropriate school officials.
- Have a viable means of transportation.
- Have the ability to work in teams.
- Perform other duties of similar nature or level.
