Transportation Supervisor
The Met High School is seeking an experienced, dependable, and hands-on Transportation Supervisor to lead our transportation department. This position is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of school bus drivers, ensuring safe and reliable transportation for students while maintaining a well-organized and compliant fleet operation. The successful candidate will be a proactive problem solver who enjoys working with people, can respond effectively to changing situations, and is committed to providing exceptional service to students, families, and staff.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Supervise, mentor, and support a team of school bus drivers.
- Coordinate daily transportation operations to ensure all routes are covered safely and efficiently.
- Schedule daily transportation, student trips, and driver assignments while maintaining established routes and adjusting schedules to meet changing operational needs.
- Respond to driver absences, emergencies, and operational issues by arranging coverage and providing transportation support when necessary.
- Monitor driver attendance, performance, and compliance with school policies and transportation regulations.
- Conduct ride-alongs, driver observations, and performance coaching as needed.
- Coordinate preventative maintenance, repairs, inspections, registrations, and documentation for the school's fleet.
- Perform regular vehicle inspections to ensure vehicles are clean, safe, and ready for daily operation.
- Maintain accurate transportation records, including maintenance logs, accident reports, licensing, and compliance documentation.
- Work closely with the Transportation Scheduler and school administrators to support changing transportation needs throughout the school year.
- Investigate transportation concerns, incidents, and accidents and assist with follow-up documentation.
- Build positive relationships with students, families, staff, vendors, and outside agencies.
- Recommend improvements to transportation procedures, safety practices, and operational efficiency.
- Participate in department meetings, training, and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Valid driver's license with a Rhode Island chauffeur's endorsement (or the ability to obtain one before employment).
- Previous experience with transportation operation or logistics preferred.
- Experience operating student transportation vehicles, shuttle buses, or commercial passenger vehicles is preferred.
- Working knowledge of vehicle maintenance, fleet operations, and transportation safety regulations.
- Strong leadership, communication, and customer service skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to remain calm, make sound decisions, and solve problems in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
- Experience with transportation scheduling or fleet management software preferred.
- Ability to pass all required background checks and maintain all certifications required by state and federal regulations.
