The Senior Project Accountant will serve as a key member of the finance team, partnering closely with Project Managers, Operations, and Executive Leadership to ensure accurate financial reporting and project performance tracking. This role will own project accounting functions from project setup through closeout, with a strong focus on job costing, WIP reporting, contract billing, lien waiver management, and project profitability analysis.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in construction accounting, understands the nuances of percentage‑of‑completion accounting, and thrives in a fast‑paced project‑driven environment.
Key Responsibilities Project Accounting & Job Costing- Maintain accurate project budgets, cost codes, and job cost reporting.
- Monitor project costs and compare actual performance against budgets and forecasts.
- Analyze project profitability and identify cost variances and potential risks.
- Collaborate with Project Managers to ensure accurate cost allocation and financial tracking.
- Prepare and maintain monthly WIP schedules.
- Review project status, earned revenue, over/under billings, and estimated costs to complete.
- Partner with operations teams to ensure accurate percentage‑of‑completion reporting.
- Assist with monthly and quarterly financial close processes related to project accounting.
- Prepare and process owner billings, including AIA progress billings.
- Manage contract values, change orders, retention schedules, and billing reconciliations.
- Ensure timely and accurate invoicing in accordance with contract requirements.
- Support revenue recognition and project forecasting processes.
- Manage subcontractor compliance documentation, including lien waivers, insurance certificates, and other project requirements.
- Review and track conditional and unconditional lien waivers.
- Ensure billing packages contain all required supporting documentation.
- Support audit requests and compliance reviews.
- Coordinate financial project closeout activities.
- Reconcile final contract values, change orders, retainage balances, and outstanding commitments.
- Ensure all project financial records are complete and properly documented.
- Assist with final owner billings and project profitability analysis.
- Prepare project-level financial reports and dashboards for management.
- Support month‑end and year‑end close activities.
- Assist in improving project accounting processes, controls, and reporting capabilities.
- Partner with accounting leadership on system enhancements and process optimization initiatives.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Construction Management, or related field.
- 5+ years of construction or project accounting experience within a general contractor, specialty contractor, or construction‑related organization.
