Permit Technician – Provo City (Closing Date: 07/19)
Provo City is hiring a Permit Technician to provide technical permit issuance and basic plan‑checking work in the Building Inspection division. The role assists residents with building permit processes, inspections, and related administrative tasks.
Compensation and Benefits- Pay Rate: $21.99 – $30.32 per hour (Grade G23, based on qualifications)

- Assist homeowners, contractors, developers, design professionals, and the public with building permit application requirements and processes.
- Explain and apply building permit procedures, fee schedules, policies, and code requirements; refer technical code interpretations to appropriate staff.
- Respond to telephone, e‑mail, and in‑person inquiries about permit applications, status, inspections, and records; route inquiries as needed.
- Support timely permit intake and routing in line with established review timelines.
- Review permit applications for completeness and compliance before routing for technical review.
- Communicate missing application information to applicants professionally.
- Operate personal computer, Microsoft Office, and city software (City View, etc.).
- Coordinate routing with Planning Engineering, Fire, Public Works, Power, and other departments.
- Maintain accurate permit records in electronic permitting software.
- Research and compile permit, fee, inspection records; prepare basic reports, spreadsheets, and documentation.
- Assist customers with inspection scheduling and maintain inspection records.
- Calculate permit fees, prepare summaries, process payments, issue receipts, and coordinate deposits with Finance.
- Maintain financial records, reports, and transaction documentation related to permits.
- Perform additional duties as required by the Division or Department.
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
- One year of permit processing or licensing experience with regular public contact, preferably in a technical city function.
- Valid, lawful Driver License.
- One year of office administration or customer service experience preferred.
- Basic knowledge of modern office practices, grammar, spelling, punctuation, telephone etiquette, and office equipment.
- Experience with local government practices preferred.
- Notary Public license in the State of Utah preferred.
Applications are reviewed in order of submission. The first screening is scheduled for July 20, 2026. Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications. Selected candidates will be required to pass a drug screen and a criminal background check. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum of six months.
