Graphic Design Specialist
The BYU Religious Studies Center (RSC) produces 15-20 publications and participates in several conferences and symposia per year. The graphic designer (I or II) provides creative design solutions and production support for religious scholarly books, journals, magazines, digital assets, and event materials produced by the RSC. These publications contain high-priority, academic content and are distributed to a wide Latter-Day Saint audience.
Key projects include the Religious Educator, Religious Education Review Magazine, and religious scholarly books co-published with Deseret Book. The designer ensures high-quality visual communication supporting the mission of BYU, Religious Scholarly Publications (including the RSC), and Deseret Book.
What you will be doing in this position
Typeset and Design Publications
- Typeset books, academic journals, magazines, and related periodicals.
- Design covers and interiors for professional books, meeting the standards of our co-publisher and distributor Deseret Book.
- Recommend content or images for the interior and exterior of projects.
- Prepare print-ready files according to printer and distributor standards.
- Consult with authors, editors, and production team to clarify design needs and standards.
- Offer professional advice regarding concept, content, structure, usability, and user interface of print, digital, and other communications.
- Assist authors in finding and preparing high-resolution files and images for print and digital publications.
- Manage assigned deadlines, schedules, and design/production workflows to meet timely project completion.
- Create promotional graphics for conferences, symposia, and social media.
- Design programs, posters, advertisements, and marketing materials for print, digital, and other media.
- Create digital graphics for web, email, and online promotions.
- Support the RSC website team in visual continuity and updates.
- Provide guidance to student designers.
- Assist the production supervisor when needed.
Education/Experience
Minimum
Required:
Three years study toward a graphic design degree OR three years professional design experience; minimum six months experience designing professional publication elements.
Preferred:
Bachelor's degree in a design-related field; one or more years professional design experience; advanced knowledge of print-production workflows.
Skills, Abilities, Knowledge
Required:
Strong design skills;
Adobe Creative Suite proficiency (especially InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop); book layout and typesetting competence; excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
Preferred:
Advanced print-production knowledge; familiarity with digital media and UI/UX principles; experience mentoring student employees.
